Job Description

For over 160 years, the University of Washington has been a hub for learning, innovation, problem solving and community building. Supporting this legacy and important public mission—with the goal of making the UW the world’s greatest public university, as measured by positive impact—guides everything we do in University Advancement. Bringing together development; alumni and stakeholder engagement; marketing and communications; and advancement operations, we advance the UW’s impact by developing meaningful connections that foster pride, advocacy and philanthropic support.

Alumni and Stakeholder Engagement (ASE), working in collaborative partnerships with the UW Alumni Association, UW Retirement Association and the University Book Store, fulfills its mission to advance higher education in the state of Washington and to support the UW through impactful, broad-based engagement with alumni, students, retirees and friends of the University. This starts with creating a culture of belonging within our organization that values the diverse experiences and expertise of our team members, allowing everyone to thrive and to contribute their unique talents as we strive to achieve our shared goals.

Alumni & Stakeholder Engagement has an exciting opening for a Director for Membership. This is a full-time permanent position.

The Director for Membership leads the strategy, growth, engagement and revenue of the University of Washington Alumni Association (UWAA) membership program, serving more than 600,000 alumni and approximately 60,000 dues-paying members. This role is responsible for driving member acquisition and retention, overseeing a program that generates more than $1 million in annual revenue and using data and insights to inform strategy and measure results.

The Director leads a team, manages program operations and budget and partners across University Advancement and the University of Washington to strengthen alumni engagement and advance organizational goals. The role also serves as a visible representative of UWAA, building relationships with alumni, volunteers, campus partners and other stakeholders through regular participation in events and programs.

Program Administration and Team Management (30%)

  • Lead, develop and support a team responsible for delivering membership programs and services.
  • Oversee membership operations, including budgeting, financial management, member administration and program performance.
  • Identify and implement improvements to processes, systems and technology that enhance efficiency and member service.
  • Manage programs and experiences that promote learning, networking, volunteerism and community engagement.

Marketing, Communications & Member Experience (30%)

  • Partner with marketing and communications teams to develop strategies that support member acquisition, engagement, retention and revenue growth.
  • Use data, member insights and audience segmentation to inform outreach and engagement efforts.
  • Monitor program and campaign performance, gather member feedback and use insights to continuously improve results.
  • Oversee membership marketing campaigns, vendor partnerships and member communications.

Partnerships & Other Duties (10%)

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with alumni, volunteers, campus partners, University leaders, board members and external organizations to advance membership and engagement goals.
