Job Description
We're hiring a Director of Business Operations to lead business operations for our product engineering organization. You'll be a strategic partner to product engineering leadership and help the organization hit its key financial and operational KPIs. You'll own financial and resource planning, lead and grow a team of business operations professionals, and act as the main link between business and technical teams.
This role is for someone who uses AI and automation in their own daily work, not just someone who supports the idea. You'll find manual and repetitive processes and turn them into clear requirements for platform and engineering teams. You'll also help design how work should flow across the organization. This is a high-impact role in an environment where the tools are still changing and the playbook is still being written.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Management
- Lead business operations initiatives within product engineering to meet key financial and operational KPIs.
- Support the product engineering leadership team by improving their processes, resource plans, and reporting.
- Lead financial and resource planning so it lines up with departmental and company goals.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of embedded business operations professionals, setting clear expectations and building a high-performing, AI-native ops function.
- Act as the main link between business and technical teams, turning operational needs and data into strategy, clear requirements, and well-informed decisions.
- Advise senior management on product engineering operations and strategy.
Operational Excellence and AI-Native Workflow Design
- Keep track of where operational work is manual, slow, repetitive, or duplicated, and bring specific proposals to automate or simplify it rather than adding headcount.
- Work with the Ops Platform and engineering teams to turn operational pain points into workflow requirements, supplying the business context, business logic, and use cases.
- Help shape shared ops infrastructure by advising on how work should flow, where handoffs break down, and what a better system would look like.
- Use AI tools and an automation-first approach in daily ops work, including reporting, tracking, coordination, and planning.
- Judge what AI-assisted work can realistically do, explain what's needed, and work credibly alongside the engineers building it.
- Champion AI-native ways of working within the pillar by doing it yourself, not just endorsing it.
Strategic Planning and Decision Making
- Help develop functional strategies within product engineering, drawing on deep product engineering expertise to shape new principles and concepts.
- Anticipate internal and external business challenges, using knowledge of outside trends and internal processes to drive innovation.
- Develop new concepts, services, technologies, or products that meet current and future customer needs.
- Recommend process or service improvements by finding synergies across the Business Unit.
- Guide decisions using functional, Business Unit, company, and industry guidelines.
- Bring ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness to complex and unusual problems.
Scope of Impact
- Manage high-risk, complex projects and initiatives that may affect the whole sub-Business Unit or function.
- Influence strategic direction for major product areas or the whole sub-Business Unit.
- Manage large budgets for major projects or programs on a regional basis.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field.
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team.
- Experience in strategic planning and execution, with a track record of driving business growth and efficiency.
- Experience in budgeting, financial analysis, resource allocation, and managing operational forecasts.
- Proven success improving operational efficiency through process improvement, workflow redesign, or automation, working with technical teams.
- Ability to describe operational problems in terms that translate into system requirements.
- Comfort joining workflow and automation design discussions with engineers and platform teams as a knowledgeable business partner, not as a builder.
- Practical, hands-on experience with AI tools used in daily ops work.
- Data fluency: able to interpret data and turn findings into decisions without a dedicated analyst.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to make data-driven decisions when things are unclear.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presenting complex information clearly and concisely.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well across engineering, product management, and senior leadership.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to quickly learn the organization, its products, and its product engineering processes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Track record of designing workflows from scratch, not just improving existing ones.
- A good instinct for telling which problems need a process fix and which need a system fix.
- Habit of asking "should this still be done manually?" before adding effort or headcount.
- Experience in risk management and handling complex business challenges.
- Comfort working where tools are still changing and the playbook is still being written.
- Experience in or supporting a product engineering organization.
