Job Overview
Reporting to the University’s Assistant Controller, the Director of Campus Accounting (“the Director”) is responsible for overseeing and directing the operation of the Campus Accounting Department which includes: financial statements reporting; various audits; general ledger accounting; fund accounting; procard card, and other electronic funds reconciliations; and internal controls and compliance.
The Director is responsible for ensuring campus compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”) and is responsible for the interpretation and application of the University’s financial policies and procedures. The Director is the principal accounting liaison for all campus accounting activities, including overseeing the completion of the monthly and year-end financial close process and preparation of campus financial statements, supporting schedules and analyses, therefore, it is imperative that the Director have an excellent understanding of GAAP. In addition, the Director must have an understanding of AICPA audit requirements and complex automated accounting systems
The Director must remain aware of developments that are applicable to the University, assess University exposure, and bring these assessments and action plan proposals to management. The Director is responsible for reviewing, assessing, implementing, and enforcing the internal controls over financial reporting and ensuring that the policies and procedures are up-to-date, relevant, and complied with. The Director is responsible for the analysis of financial information through the use of queries, spreadsheets, databases, and other reporting tools for trend analyses, forecasts, and financial ratios.
The Director must possess quality management and leadership skills that will assist the staff to accomplish objectives and direct the department in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. The Director must be able to handle complex personnel issues that may arise and the ability to communicate effectively and discipline when necessary.
Work Interactions
This is a highly technical position with a far-reaching impact on the University. The Director of Campus Accounting reports to the Assistant Controller within the Office of the CFO of the University but has a wide-ranging scope of relationships both internal and external to the University.
This position requires strong technical accounting and financial expertise, leadership and good judgment that are critical to the department’s success. The position must develop an atmosphere of teamwork within the department and commit retention and cross training for the benefit of both campus accounting staff and the University in an ever changing environment. The Director provides leadership to other professionals in the Office of the CFO and works closely with, senior University administrators, departmental professionals and other University staff on a wide variety of financial initiatives. This position plays a key strategic role in identifying, developing and implementing internal controls, financial standards, policies, and procedures for the entire University.
Requirements and Qualifications
● Bachelor degree in Accounting or Finance is required
● Master degree in Accounting or MBA is desirable
● Minimum eight to ten years progressive experience in financial accounting, reporting, and audit
● Experience to include a complex higher educational institution or not-for-profit organization and staff supervision
● Experience in other organizations of similar size and complexity may be substituted
● CPA required
● Excellent analytical and written & oral communication skills required, as well as attention to detail.
Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$103,723.00 - $202,778.93Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
