The Director of Development, Planned Giving is a champion of the Bridgeport Hospital Foundation team and an integral leader among Yale New Haven Health System Development team, directing planned giving program(s) and managing system priorities. Reporting to the Vice President of Principal and Planned Giving, the Director will be responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding planned and deferred gifts from donors and prospects to support the hospital's long-term financial strength. This role requires a seasoned fundraising professional with a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in planned giving, legacy planning, major gifts, or related development work or a proven track record of securing a wide range of planned gifts at various levels of complexity. They will bring sophisticated development expertise, employing philanthropy and charitable planning strategies to engage donors, legacy advisors, grateful patients, friends and volunteers. The ideal candidate is a results oriented, collaborative leader with technical knowledge of charitable estate planning/planned giving and excellent interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, lead and manage Bridgeport Hospital Foundation's planned giving strategies, incorporating bequests, charitable trusts, retirement, gift annuities, life insurance, and other deferred giving vehicles
  • Personally manage an individual portfolio of principal/planned giving donors, make substantive contact, and present proposals- moving prospects through the donor cycle from identification through stewardship
  • Meet regularly with the Vice President of Principal and Planned Giving and leadership to support front-line fundraising team to integrate planned giving strategies into broader development and stewardship efforts
  • Collaborate with donors and their advisors on complex charitable giving vehicles in coordination with appropriate internal stakeholders
  • Serve as a content expert on charitable gift planning and planned giving vehicles, assisting VP with training development staff as deemed helpful
  • Develop and implement marketing and communications plans to promote planned giving through targeted campaigns, outreach and printed materials/collateral
  • Implement recognition and stewardship programs through planned giving donor societies
  • Partner with clinical partners, faculty, and key leaders to assist with prospect strategy efforts that align with the strategic vision and goals to maximize Bridgeport and Yale New Haven Health System philanthropic success.
  • Actively engage centralized programs including annual fund, prospect research & management, donor engagement, communications, alumni relations and grateful patient programs.
  • Working with Advancement Services colleagues, track and report on planned giving activity and metrics, maintaining accurate records in the donor CRM, Raiser's Edge
  • Work with internal and external contacts to solve problems that range from routine to complex in nature, researching and recommending solutions.
  • Participate in professional development to achieve both performance goals and career goals in pursuit of YNHHS becoming a workplace of choice among fundraising professionals.
  • Build and deepen Bridgeport's pipeline, cultivating and engaging communities of supporters, concentrating efforts on Fairfield County
  • Formalize Legacy Advisor networks and program(s) through targeted strategic and proactive annual efforts, opportunities, workshops, and communications
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's Degree required. Advanced degree (JD, MBA, or related field) or field specific qualifications (CFRE, CAP, FCEP, etc.) preferred.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in fundraising with demonstrated success securing planned gifts and /or major gifts for healthcare institution(s) and/or higher educational institution(s).

SPECIAL SKILLS

  • Preferred Competencies:
    • Experience in an academic health system, medical school, Tier One research university, or complex nonprofit environment where philanthropy is a strategic imperative, with campaign experience preferred.
    • Fundraising experience with a focus on major/principal giving and an ability to develop and implement gift strategies with significant institutional impact.
    • A track record of success within a comprehensive capital campaign at a similar size higher educational and/or healthcare institution.
    • Outstanding collaborative skills as a member of a team while working independently across diverse constituencies.
    • Exemplary interpersonal skills with capability to favorably affect donors and volunteers.
    • Ability to foster meaningful work in a supportive culture with positivity and humor.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

  • Availability to work nights and weekends and travel to events as needed. Work is performed in a remote or office-based environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment.
