Director of Learning
Who are we?
We’re a product company building the underlying platform for a new model of AI-native education—beginning with our first application: an AI-native university in the UK.
We believe AI gives us the opportunity—and obligation—to rethink some of the basic architecture of education: what people should learn, how curriculum is organized, how teaching works, what assessment means when AI is ubiquitous, how learning adapts to an individual, and where humans matter most.
We’re an early-stage team building our way toward the answers. We form hypotheses, make things, test them, learn, and sometimes tear them down and start again.
We are looking for a Director of Learning to help shape both the learning model and the product itself.
Who are you?
You are a learning person, a product thinker, and increasingly, a bit of an engineer.
You don’t see a clean line between learning and product. The structure of a knowledge graph is a learning decision. The behavior of an agent is a learning decision. The way learner state is represented in a system is a learning decision. And the learning model is only real if we can actually build it.
You have deep expertise in how people learn, but you’re not precious about the traditional ways education has been designed. You know when research should constrain us, when emerging practice offers useful signals, and when the right thing to do is try something that sounds a little crazy and see what happens.
You’ve embraced tools like Codex and Claude Code and have real things to show for it. You may not call yourself an engineer, but code is increasingly another material you use to think, prototype, test, and build.
You like hard, underspecified problems. You have opinions, expect them to be challenged by evidence, and aren’t afraid to tear down something you helped create when we discover a better way.
What will you do?
As Director of Learning, you will help define how learning works in the product—from the underlying representations and AI behavior to curriculum, teaching, assessment, and evidence of learning.
This is not a role where Product decides what to build and Learning supplies the pedagogy. Learning is product, and product is learning. You will work closely with the Chief Product Officer and Engineering to define the system itself.
Responsibilities
Design the learning architecture. Build and refine the competencies, knowledge graphs, relationships, metadata, and underlying schemas that drive curriculum and learner experiences.
Design how AI teaches. Write and test agent prompts and pedagogical instructions, and help define strategy for agent behavior, feedback, personalization, constraints, and human intervention.
Rethink assessment for the AI era. Help define what credible evidence of learning looks like when learners have ubiquitous access to AI, then translate that into activities, assessments, criteria, and system behavior.
Build and evaluate. Use code and AI development tools to prototype ideas yourself and test them with synthetic learners, LLM-as-judge, human review, and real learners—understanding what each method can and cannot tell us.
Turn evidence into decisions. Examine learner work and behavior, draw on learning science and emerging research, design experiments, and make clear recommendations about what to keep, change, or throw away.
Help build the learning function. Create approaches and tools that can scale beyond one person, and collaborate with or lead subject-matter experts, designers, assessors, researchers, and other learning contributors as we grow.
What we’re looking for
This is a senior, hands-on role. We expect you to have substantial experience making consequential decisions about learning and enough depth in the field to operate as the company’s learning authority. We care much more about what you can do and how you think than whether that expertise came through a particular degree, title, or number of years.
Deep expertise in learning. You bring a strong practical command of learning science, learning design, curriculum, assessment, and/or competency-based education—and can translate theory into things learners actually do.
A builder’s orientation. You have gone beyond using AI to write or brainstorm. You use tools like Codex, Claude Code, APIs, or lightweight development environments to make working things.
Systems thinking. You are excited by knowledge graphs, schemas, learner models, agents, data, prompts, and how they fit together—not only by the learner-facing experience.
Strong judgment about evidence. You can distinguish a promising demo from evidence that something works, understand the limitations of synthetic evaluation and LLM-as-judge, and know when real learners and human judgment need to enter the loop.
Intellectual range. You can engage seriously with established research without treating existing practice as a constraint on what is possible.
Exceptional resourcefulness. You learn new domains quickly, make things yourself, operate well without a large team or established process, and can get excited about lighting yesterday’s great idea on fire when you find a better one.
How to apply
We’d like to see more than a résumé.
Give us a sense of how you think, make, test, and learn. Show us something you’ve built, tell us about something that changed your thinking, walk us through a messy experiment, share a prototype that never worked—whatever best helps us understand how you operate.
Don’t treat that as a checklist. We’re much more interested in genuine evidence of your curiosity, judgment, and builder instinct than in a polished application package.
