PRIMARY FUNCTION: Reporting to the Vice President for Marketing and Strategic Partnerships, the Director of Marketing is a strategic, creative, and highly collaborative marketing leader responsible for developing and executing integrated marketing strategies that advance Historic New England’s mission, strengthen its brand, expand its visibility, and grow audience engagement. Working in a complex, fast-paced, multi-site organization, the Director combines strategic thinking with a hands-on approach to implementation. They translate organizational priorities into compelling, audience-centered marketing campaigns across digital, web, email, social media, advertising, video, print, public relations, and other channels, while ensuring that Historic New England presents a consistent and distinctive brand and voice. The Director works closely with the Vice President for Marketing and Strategic Partnerships on marketing strategy, brand implementation, institutional positioning, and major organizational initiatives and takes a leadership role in translating those priorities into effective marketing plans and campaigns. They collaborate extensively with colleagues across Historic New England, bringing strong judgment, creativity, organization, and a solutions-oriented approach to managing multiple priorities and opportunities. The Director leads the day-to-day marketing function and supervises the Graphic Designer and Marketing Coordinator. They also coordinate and manage external agencies, consultants, freelancers, media partners, and other vendors as needed. This is an ideal role for an accomplished, ambitious marketing professional who is ready to take on broader leadership responsibility and make a significant impact within a growing and evolving organization. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: 40% Marketing, Brand, and Audience Strategy 30% Integrated Marketing Leadership and Operations 5% Other duties and participate in organizational initiatives as assigned. Direct Reports · Graphic Designer · Marketing Coordinator MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: · Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, professional credentials, and relevant experience, with a minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, communications, brand strategy, audience development, or a related field. · Significant experience developing and leading integrated marketing strategy in a complex, fast-paced organization with multiple programs, audiences, stakeholders, and priorities. · Demonstrated ability to operate as both a strategic thinker and an effective leader of execution, translating organizational goals into actionable marketing strategies and measurable results. · Proven experience developing, implementing, and stewarding brands, including experience managing significant brand development, refresh, repositioning, or rollout initiatives. · Deep understanding of the full marketing and communications ecosystem, including traditional marketing, direct marketing, digital, web, email, social media, paid media, print, video, content marketing, public relations, marketing funnels, and emerging channels. · Demonstrated success developing audience-centered marketing strategies that increase awareness, engagement, participation, and/or revenue. · Strong analytical skills and experience establishing KPIs, interpreting marketing and audience data, assessing campaign performance, and using insights to inform strategy and resource allocation. · Demonstrated experience leading, managing, coaching, and developing staff and creating an environment of accountability, collaboration, creativity, and high performance. · Significant experience selecting and managing agencies, consultants, freelancers, media partners, and other external vendors, including developing scopes of work and managing performance, budgets, timelines, and deliverables. · Exceptional project and priority management skills, with demonstrated ability to lead multiple complex initiatives simultaneously, work effectively under deadline, and adapt quickly as priorities change. · Excellent writing, editing, messaging, presentation, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex ideas into clear and compelling communications. · Exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build credibility, influence decisions, navigate competing priorities, and collaborate effectively with colleagues at all levels of an organization. · Experience developing and managing marketing budgets and making strategic resource-allocation decisions. · Strong working knowledge of marketing technology, CRM systems, content management systems, email marketing platforms, digital analytics, social media platforms, project management systems, and contemporary marketing tools. · New England residency and ability to travel to Historic New England sites and other locations throughout the region as needed. · Commitment to Historic New England’s mission and to fostering an inclusive, accessible, and welcoming organization and audience experience. Other Preferred Qualifications · Experience in a nonprofit, museum, arts and culture, public history, preservation, education, tourism, or other mission-driven organization. · Experience marketing a complex organization with multiple locations, programs, products, events, and audience segments. · Demonstrated experience leading a significant organizational brand initiative and translating brand strategy into practical standards, tools, campaigns, and audience experiences. · Experience working closely with senior organizational leadership on institutional positioning, reputation, and strategic communications. · Experience supporting major organizational initiatives such as capital projects, institutional campaigns, major exhibitions, conferences, launches, or other high-profile programs. · Experience with Tessitura or a comparable CRM platform. · Experience with contemporary project management platforms such as Asana. · Familiarity with the cultural, philanthropic, tourism, preservation, or media landscape of New England. WORK ENVIRONMENT: This is a hybrid position based at Historic New England’s offices in either Boston or Haverhill, Massachusetts. The Director of Marketing is expected to work regularly in person and to maintain an active presence across the organization. The position requires periodic travel between Boston and Haverhill, as well as to Historic New England sites, programs, events, and other locations throughout New England as needed. This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. The role requires the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities and deadlines, participate in meetings and events, travel between Historic New England sites and other locations, and use standard office and digital communications technology. As typically performed, the position requires talking, hearing, sitting, standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting of up to ten pounds. The position requires regular computer use, keyboarding, reading and reviewing detailed materials, and electronic file and information management.
