The Director, Product Marketing – Retention Strategy is a senior leadership role responsible for shaping and directing the strategic vision of retention strategy across the organization's product portfolio. This individual operates with a high degree of autonomy, partnering closely with executive leadership, product management, sales, and other cross-functional stakeholders to translate business objectives into differentiated retention strategies. The Director brings deep expertise in market positioning, competitive intelligence, and customer insights to drive measurable revenue growth, market share expansion, and brand relevance. This role owns the 6 – 12-month strategic roadmap for the retention strategy function and is accountable for building scalable frameworks, mentoring a high-performing team, and ensuring marketing investments deliver quantifiable business impact.
Here’s what you’ll do:
Strategic Leadership
- Set and own the 6 – 12-month strategic direction for the retention strategy department, aligning it with broader company and revenue goals.
- Direct comprehensive retention strategies across multiple product lines simultaneously, ensuring consistency and differentiation in market positioning.
- Evaluate emerging business needs and market trends, translating insights into actionable marketing initiatives with senior leadership.
Test & Learn Strategy Development
- Design and manage a robust test-and-learn framework to identify, evaluate, and scale winning retention offer strategies, leveraging data-driven experimentation to continuously optimize performance and inform business decisions.
Cohort Analysis & Targeted Strategy
- Conduct advanced cohort analyses to uncover meaningful patterns across customer attributes, translating insights into differentiated retention strategies tailored to the unique needs and behaviors of distinct customer segments.
End-to-End Strategy Ownership
- Own the full lifecycle of retention initiatives — from ideation and business case development through finance approvals, to operational execution in partnership with Care teams, and post-launch performance readouts developed in close collaboration with analytics stakeholders.
Forecasting & Churn Goal Management
- Build and maintain forecasting models to project the impact of individual retention initiatives as well as broader churn reduction goals, providing leadership with actionable visibility into performance trajectories and business outcomes.
Omnichannel Retention Expertise
- Bring hands-on experience across multiple service channels — including chat, digital/self-service, and live agent — to inform strategy design and strengthen partnership with the Care organization as the primary implementation arm for retention programs, including active participation in call listenings to maintain a grounded understanding of customer interactions.
Team Leadership & People Management
- Lead, develop, and directly manage a team of retention professionals, fostering a high-performance culture through clear goal setting, ongoing coaching, and meaningful career development.
What you’ll need to be successful:
- Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business, or related field preferred; MBA a plus.
- 5 – 7 years of progressive experience in retention strategy, with demonstrated leadership responsibility.
- Proven track record of leading go-to-market retention strategies that drive measurable business outcomes.
- Deep understanding of current business trends, competitive dynamics, and marketing methodologies.
- Strong expertise in campaign performance analytics and marketing measurement frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex, ambiguous problems with innovative and strategic solutions.
- Experience managing budgets and making financially sound investment decisions.
- Prior experience building, mentoring, and developing marketing talent.
- Excellent executive communication and cross-functional influencing skills.
