Join the PANTHERx team, and define your own RxARE future in healthcare! Director, Software Engineering Location: Pittsburgh, PA (Hybrid) Classification: Exempt Status: Full-Time Reports to: VP, Software Development Purpose The Director, Software Engineering serves as second-in-command to the VP, Software Development, providing dedicated operational leadership for the Software Engineering organization and ensuring consistent execution, scalable delivery practices, and effective management across key product and platform teams. This role directly leads the Software Development Managers responsible for Marketplace Engineering, Enterprise Pharmacy Systems, and RCMx, translating strategic priorities into coordinated delivery plans, measurable outcomes, and strong team performance. This role is critical to supporting the organization through significant growth and transformation. The Director strengthens engineering leadership capacity, improves cross-team alignment, and enables the VP of Software Development to focus on enterprise strategy, partnerships, architecture, DevOps, and long-term technology direction while ensuring day-to-day software delivery remains disciplined, predictable, and aligned to business priorities. Responsibilities Delivery Leadership Leads, coaches, and develops Software Development Managers (Marketplace Engineering; Enterprise Pharmacy Systems; RCMx), with accountability for team performance, staffing and delivery outcomes. Oversees delivery planning and execution across software engineering teams, including sprint and planning cadence, cross-team dependencies, delivery risks, and performance reporting. Establishes and operates a platform-owner model in which every platform has a named, accountable owner responsible for its roadmap, technical debt, lifecycle, and operational health; close current ownership gaps and reduce single-point-of-failure exposure across the platform portfolio (pharmacy systems, integration/ESB, workflow automation, marketplace, and RPA). Ensures platform roadmaps and delivery plans remain aligned with enterprise milestones, business priorities, and operational readiness needs; escalate risks and conflicts early. Drives consistent, measured, and responsible adoption of AI across the software development lifecycle; owning the shared AI-in-SDLC playbook, tooling standards, quality and security guardrails, and productivity metrics across the engineering towers in coordination with the Principal Architect, Principal DevOps, and enterprise AI governance and Security. Enterprise AI/model governance and the data/ML platform remain with Data & Analytics. Organizational Scaling Leads execution of the software engineering growth plan across assigned teams, including hiring prioritization, sequencing, onboarding support, and manager readiness. Owns the software delivery resource forecast and cross-tower capacity model as a standing discipline rather than an ad hoc VP task; balancing capacity against demand and backlog, surfacing capacity gaps with evidence to support investment and hiring decisions, and translating capacity and backlog data into the investment narrative the VP carries to the ELT. Owns the internal-FTE-versus-contractor strategy for software delivery; defining which work is core and internally owned versus flexed through contractors, driving knowledge transfer and redundancy for contractor-locked capabilities (e.g., RPA), and flexing contractor capacity up or down against the delivery forecast. Builds and strengthens engineering career development, mentorship, and succession planning practices across the Software Engineer, Senior Engineer, Lead, and Architect levels. Owns software delivery financial planning and resource investment recommendations, including contractor spend, staffing recommendations, vendor-supported delivery capacity, and budget inputs; monitors expenditures against plan and provides data-driven recommendations to optimize delivery outcomes and resource utilization. Manages the software engineering contractor portfolio, including vendor performance, spend oversight, contract resource allocation, knowledge transfer expectations, and workforce continuity planning to ensure an appropriate balance between internal capabilities and external delivery support. Partners with FP&A to develop resource forecasts, monitor contractor and vendor expenditures against budget, and support workforce investment planning aligned to delivery and organizational priorities. Cross-Functional & IT Alignment Represents Software Development in cross-functional planning and alignment forums with IT, QA, Product, Informatics, Architecture, DevOps, Data & Analytics, and Security partners. Partners with QA leadership to define effective quality standards, handoff processes, and testing expectations, ensuring engineering input is incorporated early. Coordinates with the Principal Architect and Principal DevOps (shared services reporting to the VP) to ensure architecture governance and DevOps practices are consistently applied, and define the engagement model and build/release pipeline SLAs between software delivery and DevOps. Defines delivery-side interfaces with Data & Analytics (data dependencies for SWFTx and RCM workstreams) and Security (review dependencies for SWFTx and RCM automation). Serves as the primary point of contact for Informatics-embedded BAs/POs and QA leadership on workstream-level delivery ceremonies. Operational Governance Establishes and maintains delivery metrics (on-time delivery, defect trends, cycle time, and AI-in-SDLC adoption and productivity) and report them to the VP and, where applicable, into shared QA/Informatics dashboards. Leads escalation coordination and production issue response for incidents that span multiple software engineering teams or platforms. Participates in architecture review and shared-standards governance alongside the Principal Architect. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. 12+ years of progressive software engineering experience, including 5+ years leading engineering managers, technical leads, or comparable leadership roles across multiple concurrent delivery streams. Demonstrated experience scaling engineering teams through headcount growth, organizational change, and evolving delivery practices. Strong working knowledge of the .NET/Azure technology stack, integration platforms, and modern SDLC practices. Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with experience partnering with VP-level and executive stakeholders across functions such as IT, QA, Product, and Informatics. Track record of managing delivery against hard external milestones and cross-team dependencies. Experience managing a blended workforce of internal FTEs and nearshore/offshore contractors, including knowledge transfer and redundancy planning. Experience establishing platform or product ownership models and managing technical debt and platform lifecycle across a portfolio. Preferred Qualifications Experience in healthcare, specialty pharmacy, or another highly regulated industry. Familiarity with workflow orchestration platforms (Camunda), enterprise service bus architectures, and streaming data integration (Azure Event Hubs). Experience partnering with a centralized QA or Informatics/BA function rather than owning embedded QA/BA directly. PMP, SAFe, or other Agile/program leadership certification. Experience integrating AI into the software development lifecycle. Work Environment This job functions in a professional home or office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and fax machines. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, see, talk, or hear. Generous paid time off is also available to all full-time employees, as well as limited paid time off for part-time employees. Of course we offer paid holidays too!
