Job Description
The Director, Software Engineering will lead Reuters' content management systems engineering organization, with direct responsibility for the platform underpinning content creation, editorial workflows, and publishing on Reuters.com. Reporting to the VP, Software Engineering, this leader will direct the technical strategy, architecture, and delivery of Reuters' CMS platform through a major transition, building and leading the engineering, editorial-tooling, and delivery teams responsible for its day-to-day operation and long-term evolution.
This is a hands-on leadership role: the Director is expected to act as a principal engineer when needed, providing direct technical guidance on both front-end and back-end challenges, not just organizational oversight. This leadership position will shape the technical roadmap for Reuters' CMS platform, translating editorial and business requirements into a scalable, reliable architecture.
The ideal candidate will build and lead a high-performing engineering organization spanning platform engineering, editorial tooling, and delivery operations, while establishing the standards, processes, and talent needed to support Reuters' journalism at scale. Success requires deep technical expertise in modern web and cloud architecture, proven people leadership across multiple teams, and a clear point of view on where AI can responsibly accelerate how the organization builds and ships software.
Relocation Support & Travel: Available upon discussion; minimal travel expected.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the technical architecture and long-term roadmap for Reuters' content management platform, directing design decisions around scalability, performance, and cost across backend services and AWS infrastructure.
- Establish and maintain uptime and reliability standards for a production platform serving external customers at scale, while evaluating and guiding the platform's modern web rendering strategy.
- Partner with editorial stakeholders to translate newsroom workflows into platform requirements, directing the roadmap for editorial tooling and identifying opportunities for AI-assisted content workflows that support without compromising journalistic standards.
- Lead the teams responsible for platform delivery, including release management and production support, while owning the technical execution of the platform transition and establishing metrics to track platform health and operational risk.
- Build, mentor, and lead a multi-team engineering organization, including managers and individual contributors, while fostering a high-performing culture grounded in ownership and continuous improvement across distributed teams.
- Communicate technical strategy and tradeoffs credibly to engineers, product partners, executives, and customers while championing AI upskilling and adoption programs across the engineering organization.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
- 10+ years in software engineering with 4+ years managing engineers, including experience managing managers or leading multiple teams
- Demonstrated ownership of a production platform serving external customers at scale with experience in Agile methodologies and DevOps practices
- Deep knowledge of AWS, serverless architecture, and distributed systems; strong grasp of modern web rendering (server-side and client-side rendering, React, build tooling); and working knowledge of HTTP, caching semantics, and CDN behavior in high-traffic environments
- Experience with microservices architecture, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), test automation frameworks, and browser/system performance testing methodologies
- Ability to communicate technical concepts credibly to engineers, product partners, executives, and customers, with demonstrated ability to build and lead high-performing technical teams across multiple functions
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in SaaS or platform businesses where developers are among customers
- Background in publishing, media technology, or content management systems, or experience leading an organization through platform consolidation or modernization
- Familiarity with enterprise-scale CDN providers (particularly Akamai or CloudFront) and cloud cost optimization at scale
- Experience integrating teams with divergent engineering cultures under shared standards, or exposure to AI/ML technologies with a track record of adopting AI into engineering workflows responsibly
- Resilience and adaptability in the face of ambiguity, with passion for technology and its potential to drive business value; strong advocacy for diversity, inclusion, and cultural sensitivity across distributed organizations
