The Role

The Director, Technical Publications and Content Engineering reports to the Senior Director, Specification and Testing and leads the Technical Publications function. This leader is responsible for the team, services, practices, platforms, and governance through which the Bluetooth SIG’s technical documents are written, edited, reviewed, maintained, and published.

The Director will provide strong, inclusive people leadership; deliver responsive, high-quality service to members and member groups; and guide the evolution of technical content toward modern content-engineering practices. The role also serves as a trusted strategic advisor to the Senior Director on priorities, capabilities, risks, and opportunities.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead, develop, and support the Technical PublicationsContent Engineering team, including organizational planning, performance management, coaching, hiring, and succession development.

  • Lead the delivery of technical writing and editing services for Working Group-developed Bluetooth specifications throughout development, review, approval, and publication.

  • Lead the planning, writing, editing, maintenance, and publication of SIG-developed test documents, ICS materials, qualification content, implementation guidance, and related technical documentation.

  • Ensure responsive, high-quality service to members, Working Groups, committees, and other stakeholders, and continually improve their experience working with Technical Publications.

  • Lead the team’s transition toward lightweight markup, GitHub-based collaboration, docs-as-code workflows, structured and reusable content, automation, and responsible AI-enabled practices.

  • Define and maintain editorial standards, content architecture, templates, terminology, quality controls, and publication practices across the technical-documentation portfolio.

  • Establish clear operating mechanisms, measures, and reporting to support quality, consistency, traceability, compliance, capacity planning, and reliable delivery.

  • Oversee required editorial, technical, legal, procedural, and publication reviews, ensuring that documentation processes align with applicable policies and governance requirements.

  • Partner with engineering, testing, qualification, legal, IT, product, program, and member-facing teams to improve end-to-end content processes and supporting tools.

  • Assess emerging content technologies and recommend practical investments that improve author and editor productivity, document quality, maintainability, and member value.

  • Advise the Senior Director, Specification and Testing on technical-publicationscontent engineering strategy, organizational capability, priorities, risks, opportunities, and investment needs.

  • Represent Content EngineeringTechnical Publications with executive leadership, member groups, committees, cross-functional forums, and the Board as appropriate.

  • Manage the function’s budget, vendors, contractors, and external service relationships as assigned.

  • Support a global organization and travel worldwide up to 10 percent of the time.


    Skills and Requirements

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in technical publications, technical writing and editing, documentation, content operations, or a related field.

  • 5+ years of people-leadership experience, including leading managers and experienced writing or editing professionals.

  • Demonstrated success leading technical-documentation teams through significant technology, workflow, or organizational change.

  • Strong technical writing and editing foundation, with experience producing complex, highly structured, and technically precise documentation.

  • Experience with Git and GitHub-based content collaboration, docs-as-code practices, and lightweight markup such as AsciiDoc or Markdown.

  • Experience applying automation and AI-assisted capabilities to authoring, editing, review, quality assurance, publishing, or content maintenance.

  • Experience establishing scalable documentation governance, editorial standards, review controls, and compliance processes.

  • Experience supporting standards development, member-driven organizations, technical consortia, open-source communities, or similarly complex stakeholder environments is strongly preferred.
