Shaping the Future of South Yorkshire Through Technology
At the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), we're delivering one of the most ambitious transformation programmes in the region's history.
From the introduction of bus franchising, which will transform public transport across South Yorkshire, to modernising our digital platforms, improving customer experiences, harnessing the power of data and building technology ecosystems that support thousands of residents every day, we're investing heavily in our digital future.
This is a rare opportunity to join our Digital and Technology Services team at a pivotal moment. As a Solutions Architect, you'll help design and shape technology that underpins major regional services and programmes, influencing how we deliver transport, economic growth, housing, skills and public services for years to come.
You'll join a forward-thinking organisation where technology is recognised as a strategic enabler, not simply a support function. With significant investment underway, a growing architecture capability and some of the most exciting public sector technology challenges in the country, there's never been a better time to join us.
Applications must be accompanied by a cover letter to detail how you meet the criteria as detailed within the role profile (please see role profile attached). Please note, all applications should be made directly via our careers portal.
About the role
This is far more than a traditional architecture role.
You will play a leading role in defining the technology solutions that support major transformation programmes, including our landmark Bus Franchising Programme, helping to create seamless experiences for customers while ensuring the technology behind the scenes is secure, scalable and fit for the future.
Working across business, data, cyber security, delivery teams and external partners, you'll bring together complex technologies into coherent, end-to-end solutions that make a real-world difference.
You'll have the opportunity to:
- Shape technology that supports one of the UK's largest public transport transformation programmes.
- Influence strategic technology decisions and future digital investment across the organisation.
- Design innovative cloud, data and integration solutions that connect services, systems and people.
- Work with senior leaders and stakeholders to solve complex organisational challenges through technology.
- Help create the digital foundations that will support future growth and transformation across South Yorkshire.
About you
You'll be equally comfortable discussing strategic outcomes with senior stakeholders as you are exploring technical solutions with delivery teams.
You enjoy seeing the bigger picture, bringing people together around a shared vision and turning complexity into clear, practical solutions. Most importantly, you'll be motivated by the opportunity to use technology to deliver meaningful change at scale.
We're looking for someone who:
- Brings curiosity, innovation and a passion for continuous improvement.
- Builds trusted relationships and can influence across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Thrives in complex environments where collaboration and problem-solving are essential.
- Can balance strategic thinking with hands-on delivery and tangible outcomes.
- Enjoys being part of transformational programmes where technology has a visible impact on customers and communities.
Why Join SYMCA?
At SYMCA, you'll have the opportunity to work on programmes that genuinely matter. Few organisations can offer the chance to influence regional transport reform, build large-scale digital services and help shape the future of an entire city region all at the same time.
In return, we offer:
- Meaningful work with tangible impact on the lives of over 1.4 million people across South Yorkshire.
- The opportunity to contribute to the landmark Bus Franchising Programme and wider regional transformation initiatives.
- Flexible and hybrid working to support a healthy work-life balance.
- A supportive and collaborative culture where new ideas are welcomed and encouraged.
- Excellent opportunities for professional development, growth and career progression.
