About Us
NGP VAN is the winningest technology platform in the history of democratic and progressive causes, working tirelessly to innovate and advance the technology our clients rely on to bolster our democracy. We help power the trailblazers, campaigners, and advocates fighting up and down the ticket for equality, racial justice, reproductive freedom, democracy, climate reform, and more— including the national Democratic committees and progressive organizations, thousands of Democratic campaigns, hundreds of labor unions, advocacy organizations, progressive and non-partisan PACs, and other organizations.
About the Role
Bonterra / NGP VAN — Fundraising & Compliance Engineering Team
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join Bonterra/NGP VAN's Fundraising & Compliance Engineering team. You'll help build and scale the tools that power how progressive campaigns and nonprofits raise money and accurately track and report that activity — work that directly supports election readiness and democratic participation at scale.
This role offers the opportunity to work on industry-leading applications using modern technologies including ASP.NET, ReactJS, SQL Server, Azure, AWS, Redis, ElasticSearch, and Auth0 for authentication and identity management.
Key Responsibilities
- Architecture & Technical Leadership: Participate in system design decisions for complex features and subsystems. Propose approaches that balance performance, maintainability, scalability, and business needs. Identify opportunities to simplify scope, reduce code complexity, and eliminate technical debt proactively.
- Mentorship & Code Stewardship: Mentor peers through thoughtful code reviews, design collaboration, and knowledge sharing. Model engineering best practices and help raise the technical bar across your team.
- Feature Ownership: Design and implement features for fundraising, compliance, and election readiness workflows. Develop and maintain third-party integrations. Deliver high-quality, maintainable code that meets performance, security, and scalability standards.
- AI-Assisted Development: Apply AI coding tools independently to accelerate complex work. Write clear, well-defined specs that enable effective AI-assisted development and evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability.
- Cross-Team Collaboration: Work with product management and cross-functional engineering teams to ensure cohesive solutions and strong alignment across the platform.
Requirements
- Significant experience or a strong foundation in software engineering — typically 5 years
- Solid understanding of web scalability challenges and solutions
- Demonstrated willingness and ability to use AI coding tools to enhance your development workflow
- Comfort working independently on complex, less-defined problems and proposing solutions
- Experience mentoring peers and participating in architecture discussions
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Preferred Qualifications
- 7+ years of software development experience, or equivalent skills
- Strong JavaScript skills, especially with ReactJS
- Proficiency in C# and ASP.NET
- Experience working with SQL Server; candidates with deeper experience in performance tuning or query optimization are encouraged to highlight that
- Experience in political software, campaign technology, or election readiness
- Hands-on experience with Azure, Redis, and ElasticSearch
- Experience with AWS cloud services
- Experience building or integrating AI/LLM-powered product features
- Experience with third-party API integrations
