Description

Solar Power World (SPW) is seeking a hands-on editorial leader, entrepreneurial creator-journalist and strategic thinker to lead the brand’s content, community and next stage of growth.

Solar’s expanding role in electricity generation, advances in energy storage and a shifting policy landscape make this a consequential and compelling industry to cover. For the contractors, installers, developers and manufacturers navigating that change, clear, independent journalism is essential.

This role combines the reporting instincts of a journalist, the judgment of an editor and the vision of a media entrepreneur. You will report and write, guide contributors, host industry conversations and help solar professionals make better business and technical decisions.

Solar Power World is part of Arrowfly, giving you the opportunity to lead a focused industry brand within a larger, well-resourced media organization.

Your Mission: Lead the Journalism, Build the Community

Your responsibilities extend beyond daily publishing. You will connect reporting, newsletters, webinars, podcasts and live events into a cohesive editorial strategy that informs and brings together solar professionals.

As SPW’s public editorial leader, you will cultivate relationships, spark discussion and develop new offerings that deepen audience engagement. You will also lead the flagship Top Solar Contractors and Top Products programs. Your journalism will strengthen the community, and your community relationships will inform your journalism.

Success will be essential journalism, reliable execution, stronger audience relationships and credible flagship programs—supported by visible editorial leadership and a focused agenda for growth.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Lead the editorial strategy

  • Set editorial direction across solar installation, project development, equipment, storage, policy and the business of solar.
  • Balance timely news with original reporting, technical coverage, practical business insights and distinctive enterprise stories.
  • Explain what industry developments mean for solar professionals while maintaining high standards for accuracy, fairness, sourcing and editorial independence.

Report, write and edit

  • Produce original reporting, interviews, features, analysis and daily news, remaining an active journalist as well as an editorial leader.
  • Build trusted relationships with contractors, installers, developers, manufacturers, policymakers and other sources.
  • Edit staff, freelance and contributed content for accuracy, clarity, relevance and consistency.
  • Look beyond press releases to uncover emerging trends and underreported developments, making complex technical and policy subjects accessible without sacrificing substance.

Run the editorial operation

  • Own the editorial calendar across daily coverage, long-term projects, newsletters, multimedia and events.
  • Coordinate staff, freelancers and contributors, providing clear direction and constructive feedback while balancing daily publishing with ambitious original journalism.
  • Use audience analytics to guide decisions and AI to support productivity while prioritizing distinctive, original reporting.
  • Collaborate with audience development, production, marketing and commercial colleagues while preserving editorial standards.

Build a multiplatform editorial brand

  • Direct and contribute to newsletters with a distinctive voice and a compelling reason to subscribe and return.
  • Develop, host and moderate webinars and podcasts, including topic selection, guest recruitment, preparation and delivery.
  • Shape live-event agendas, recruit speakers, conduct interviews and moderate panels that bring the industry together.
  • Cover trade shows, conferences and project sites, generating timely reporting and deeper follow-up coverage.
  • Engage readers through professional networks and industry conversations, adapting coverage thoughtfully across channels rather than simply repeating content.

Own Top Solar Contractors and Top Products

  • Lead each program’s editorial strategy, annual calendar, execution and ongoing development.
  • Oversee submissions, verification and editorial review, maintaining clear criteria and consistent, transparent processes.
  • Direct associated coverage and oversee the annual Top Solar Contractors awards reception.
  • Extend both programs’ value beyond publication day, collaborating on promotional and commercial opportunities without compromising rankings, selections or coverage.

Identify and develop growth opportunities

  • Use audience data, reader conversations and industry relationships to identify unmet needs.
  • Propose and test new newsletters, editorial series, multimedia offerings and live experiences.
  • Develop proposals defining audience value, resource requirements and business opportunities, then work with cross-functional colleagues to launch and evaluate promising ideas.
Requirements

WHAT YOU BRING

We’re looking for a journalist who blends newsroom instincts with community-building vision: someone who thrives on uncovering stories, connecting people, guiding industry conversations and leading the SPW team.

  • 5+ years of experience in journalism, editorial leadership, content strategy or a related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English or a related field preferred.
  • A strong record of reporting, writing and editing in B2B, trade, business, technical or energy journalism.
  • Experience setting priorities and managing contributors, deadlines and multiple projects while remaining a hands-on producer.
  • Excellent news judgment and the ability to distinguish meaningful developments from promotional claims.
  • Curiosity and technical fluency to cover solar equipment, installation practices, storage, project economics and policy.
  • Confidence interviewing experts, moderating discussions and representing a media brand publicly.
  • Experience creating or overseeing newsletters, webinars, podcasts or event programming.
  • Entrepreneurial instincts and the ability to turn audience needs into viable editorial concepts.
  • Strong organizational and collaboration skills, with comfort using audience data without allowing traffic goals to override relevance or trust.
  • Sound judgment about sourcing, conflicts of interest and the separation of editorial and sponsored work.
  • Willingness to travel for reporting, industry events and brand activities.
  • Particularly valuable experience includes covering solar or adjacent technical markets; managing rankings, recognition programs or industry research; and launching or growing an editorial product, community or event.
  • Work successfully remote, with travel for industry events, company meetings and coverage as needed.

Please submit a résumé, selected reporting and editing samples, and a brief statement explaining how you would approach leading Solar Power World. Include an example of an editorial product, series, program or event you helped develop, describing your contribution and what you learned.
