Electrical CAD Designer

Location: Berkeley, CA | Hybrid Contract: 1-Year Contract with Guaranteed Term; Additional Extensions Available Pay Rate: $73/hour Client: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Project: Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Electrical CAD Designer to support the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) Project at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. This position will develop detailed electrical designs, schematics, models, and engineering documentation that translate engineering concepts into manufacturable products.

The ideal candidate will have strong electrical CAD experience and the ability to create manufacturing-ready documentation while collaborating closely with electrical and mechanical engineers, project managers, and manufacturing teams. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a complex, highly technical scientific engineering project at one of the nation’s premier research laboratories.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain electrical CAD models, schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts using project-approved CAD software.
  • Develop detailed, manufacturing-ready electrical documentation to support fabrication, assembly, testing, and installation.
  • Prepare and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), wire lists, cable schedules, and related engineering documentation.
  • Review designs and incorporate engineering feedback, design-review comments, and approved engineering changes.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, project managers, manufacturing personnel, and other technical staff to ensure designs meet project requirements.
  • Support the integration of electrical and mechanical designs and product assemblies.
  • Participate in design coordination and technical design reviews as needed.
  • Maintain organized CAD files, design libraries, and revision-controlled engineering documentation.
  • Work within Windchill, PLM/PDM systems, and other designated engineering and document-control systems.
  • Ensure designs and documentation comply with applicable industry standards, codes, project requirements, and quality procedures.
  • Develop engineering drawing revisions and complete design packages supporting manufacturing, assembly, installation, and other project activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Drafting/Design, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • 5+ years of professional experience producing electrical CAD designs.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical, Autodesk Inventor, KiCad, or equivalent electrical CAD software.
  • Experience developing manufacturing-ready electrical documentation, including:
  • Electrical schematics
  • Wiring diagrams
  • Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Wire and cable schedules
  • Panel layouts
  • Experience maintaining revision-controlled engineering documentation within a PLM or PDM system.
  • Working knowledge of electrical engineering principles, electrical components, schematic development, and wiring practices.
  • Familiarity with applicable electrical design standards and industry codes.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and document-control practices.
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting DOE national laboratories, research facilities, particle accelerators, or other complex scientific or industrial engineering projects.
  • Experience using Autodesk Inventor for 3D electrical or electromechanical design.
  • Experience integrating electrical and mechanical CAD models.
  • Experience with PTC Windchill or similar engineering configuration/document-management systems.
  • Experience supporting fabrication, assembly, installation, testing, or commissioning of complex engineered systems.

Work Environment & Contract

This is a hybrid position based in Berkeley, California, supporting Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Advanced Light Source Upgrade Project. The role requires regular interaction with engineering personnel and access to project facilities and engineering systems; on-site work may be required based on project needs.
