Description

The Opportunity

RETTEW is seeking an Electrical Engineering student for an Electrical Engineer internship with our Facilities and Construction team during Summer 2027.

This internship offers practical experience supporting electrical design for facility, infrastructure, utility, energy, and construction projects. You will work alongside experienced engineers and other technical professionals to see how electrical concepts move from early evaluation and design through documentation, coordination, and construction.

You will contribute to active project work while developing your understanding of power distribution, lighting, controls, equipment coordination, renewable-energy systems, and multidisciplinary design. Assignments will be matched to your coursework, capabilities, and development throughout the summer.

What You Will Do

As an Assistant Electrical Engineer Intern, you will:

  • Support electrical engineers with the planning and design of electrical systems for facilities, infrastructure, utility, energy, and construction projects.
  • Assist with electrical load information, equipment data, voltage-drop or other basic engineering calculations under the direction of experienced staff.
  • Help develop and update electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, plans, details, schedules, and other design documents using applicable drafting and design software.
  • Support the design and documentation of power distribution, lighting, grounding, controls, instrumentation, communications, and related systems; research equipment, materials, codes, standards, and manufacturer information.
  • Assist with technical specifications, cost information, reports, calculations, and construction documents while maintaining organized project files.
  • Coordinate electrical information with civil, structural, mechanical, process, environmental, and construction team members.
  • Review drawings, field information, photographs, and equipment documentation; participate in design reviews and quality-control activities.
  • Support construction-phase activities such as submittal or shop-drawing review, requests for information, record-document updates, and site observations as assigned.
  • Join occasional field or facility visits to observe existing conditions, construction progress, equipment, and installed systems while following RETTEW safety requirements.

What We Are Looking For

Required

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Completion of foundational electrical engineering coursework, such as circuits, electronics, digital systems, power systems, controls, or a comparable curriculum.
  • Interest in facility, infrastructure, utility, energy, or construction-related electrical engineering.
  • Ability to apply classroom concepts, follow technical direction, ask thoughtful questions, and learn from feedback.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, communication, collaboration, and ability to work full time from May 17 through August 13, 2027.

Preferred

  • Rising junior or senior standing by Summer 2027.
  • Coursework or project experience involving electrical power, power distribution, renewable energy, lighting, controls, instrumentation, or facility systems.
  • Exposure to AutoCAD, Revit, ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or other engineering and design software.
  • Experience through a laboratory, student design team, research project, prior internship, co-op, or relevant technical employment; familiarity with the National Electrical Code is a plus.

What You Will Gain

  • Mentorship from an experienced electrical engineering professional and day-to-day collaboration with a multidisciplinary project team.
  • Experience contributing to real project deliverables rather than completing a separate classroom-style assignment.
  • Exposure to the full project lifecycle, including assessment, design, coordination, documentation, procurement, and construction support.
  • A stronger understanding of consulting engineering, quality control, project delivery, and electrical applications across facilities, utilities, renewable energy, and infrastructure.

Work Environment

Workplace Designation: Hybrid

Location: Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania

Internship Dates: May 17 through August 13, 2027

This role is expected to be approximately 90% office-based and 10% field-based. The internship includes in-office collaboration, focused design and documentation work, virtual coordination, and occasional visits to project or facility locations. Travel for company business may occur occasionally; driving is not an essential function of the position.
