Show job description

Whitetower Energy Ltd operates a portfolio of peaking power stations across the UK, including Rolls-Royce Industrial Trent 50/60 open-cycle gas turbines at Middlesbrough, Derby, Birmingham, Exeter and Croydon; a GE LM6000 gas turbine at Thornhill; and two GE Frame 9E gas turbines and five Wärtsilä 10 MW diesel reciprocating generating units at Peterborough. These facilities support the UK's electricity supply through flexible, reliable power generation.

Opportunity Summary

The Electrical Support Engineer provides fleet-wide technical expertise to ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operation of Whitetower Energy's power generation assets. Responsibilities include high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) electrical support, equipment reliability, fault investigation, outage planning, maintenance strategies and engineering projects. Reporting to the Fleet Engineer, this position works with station personnel, contractors and equipment manufacturers to resolve technical issues, maintain plant availability and support long-term improvements.

This remote, home-based position requires extensive travel throughout the UK. Sheffield provides a strategically positioned base for supporting the Thornhill, Derby and Viking facilities, while maintaining responsibility for the entire seven-location fleet.

Salary and Benefits

The starting salary is £65,000–£70,000 per annum, depending on experience, with eligibility for an annual performance-related bonus.

  • Private healthcare
  • Company pension scheme
  • Performance bonus potential
  • Annual leave entitlement
  • Sick pay
  • Flexible home-based working when not required on site

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide fleet-wide HV and LV electrical engineering support, ensuring compliance with applicable UK legislation, engineering standards and safe working practices.
  • Investigate electrical equipment faults, protection system issues and recurring failures, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions to improve plant reliability.
  • Undertake HV and LV switching, isolation, inspection and testing activities where appropriately trained and authorised, providing technical guidance to station personnel.
  • Coordinate electrical engineering activities during planned and unplanned outages, working with station teams, contractors and OEMs to minimise downtime and restore generation availability.
  • Develop consistent preventive, corrective and condition-based electrical maintenance strategies across the fleet, utilising the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Evaluate electrical modifications, upgrades and engineering designs, ensuring appropriate technical reviews, change management and regulatory compliance.
  • Manage technical assessments and electrical engineering projects, overseeing contractors, installation, testing, commissioning and quality assurance activities.
  • Maintain fleet-wide electrical asset registers, engineering documentation and critical spares requirements to support effective maintenance and equipment availability.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering and external stakeholders to plan electrical work, establish budgets and secure necessary resources.
  • Contribute to short- and long-term fleet engineering strategies, identifying opportunities to improve electrical system performance, reliability and lifecycle costs.
  • Support electrical, control and instrumentation activities across the fleet, providing technical expertise and quality assurance while promoting a strong safety culture.

Qualifications and Experience

  • An HND or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline is required; a relevant degree is preferred. Equivalent technical training combined with substantial industry or military experience may be considered.
  • Relevant electrical engineering experience within power generation, heavy industry or a similarly complex industrial environment is required, preferably involving gas turbine generating facilities.
  • Strong technical knowledge of HV and LV electrical systems, including switchgear, generators, transformers, protection equipment and associated plant infrastructure, is essential.
  • Practical experience in electrical fault diagnosis, root cause analysis, equipment testing, troubleshooting and reliability improvement is expected.
  • Proven ability to manage electrical engineering projects, planned outages and technical contractors, including project scheduling, budgeting and quality assurance.
  • Sound understanding of UK electrical safety requirements, isolation procedures, safe systems of work and relevant engineering standards, with the ability to obtain necessary site-specific electrical authorisations.
  • Demonstrated competence in interpreting electrical drawings, schematics, technical specifications, OEM documentation and engineering designs.
  • Familiarity with CMMS applications and maintenance planning processes is desirable, alongside proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Effective communication, organisational and problem-solving skills are essential, with the ability to work independently and collaborate with operational teams and external stakeholders. Membership of a relevant professional engineering institution, or progress towards membership, is preferred.
  • A full, valid driving licence and willingness to travel extensively throughout the UK are required.
