Build a genuine specialisation in Employment & Industrial Law
Are you ready to grow your Employment Law career with complex work, commercially engaged clients and the support to build genuine specialist expertise?
Roberts Crosbie Mortensen Lawyers is a growing specialist Business and Litigation firm with offices in Newcastle and Sydney. We work closely with growing SMEs, business owners and directors to solve complex legal problems, manage risk and support the decisions that help their businesses grow.
We are looking for a Lawyer with 3–7 years post-admission experience who wants to focus their practice on Employment & Industrial Law.
You may be working towards Associate, already at that level, or operating as a Senior Associate. Our Workplace team is growing quickly and our structure gives us the flexibility to hire the right person.
Learn from an Accredited Specialist while building your own practice
You will work closely with and report to an Accredited Specialist in Employment & Industrial Law with an established market reputation and a strong pipeline of repeat and referral work.
This is not a role where you will sit behind someone else indefinitely.
You will take ownership of clients and files, manage matters from end to end and develop the confidence to operate autonomously, while having access to specialist technical support and supervision when you need it.
If becoming an Accredited Specialist yourself interests you, we want to help you get there. We provide coaching, paid study leave and a financial reward for achieving Specialist Accreditation.
Complex work with commercially engaged clients
Our clients are predominantly privately owned SMEs, business owners and directors who value practical, commercial and strategic advice.
We are selective about the work we take on so our lawyers can focus on complex, commercially meaningful matters where specialist legal expertise adds genuine value.
Your Work May Include
employment contracts, policies and restraints of trade
performance management, disciplinary processes and workplace investigations
terminations, redundancies and unfair dismissal
general protections, adverse action and discrimination claims
Fair Work Commission proceedings and other employment disputes
awards, enterprise agreements and industrial relations compliance
executive employment and senior employee exits
employment issues arising from business sales, restructures, insolvency and commercial disputes.
The support to perform at your best
We have deliberately invested in the infrastructure around our lawyers.
You will have experienced legal assistants, strong systems and dedicated Operations, Workplace Experience, People & Culture and Sales & Marketing support.
Regular team huddles, 1:1s, matter reviews and solicitor/legal assistant catch-ups create strong communication without taking away your autonomy.
The result is more time for high-value legal work, clients, professional development and building your practice.
Be rewarded for what you build
High performance should have meaningful financial upside.
Depending on your level and eligibility, you may participate in our individual fee earner commission. Once your agreed collections target is achieved, commission is paid monthly in addition to salary, with no cap on what you can earn.
It is not all about billing, when you take on leadership, mentoring, business development and other responsibilities we have programs in place to recognise and reward your efforts.
What we offer
competitive salary plus uncapped monthly commission for eligible lawyers
a consistent pipeline of Employment & Industrial Law work
direct access to an Accredited Specialist in Employment & Industrial Law
coaching, paid study leave and a financial reward for achieving Specialist Accreditation
annual CPD budget and fortnightly Lunch & Learns
experienced legal assistants and dedicated corporate-services support
established practice resources including smart operating procedures, precedents, checklists and workflows to help you onboard quickly, work efficiently and delegate with confidence
clear career pathways
our Legal Legends recognition program and quarterly firm themes, designed to keep teams aligned around what matters, recognise achievement and bring some friendly competition and gamification into the way we work
flexible working, including working from home
a People First culture focused on sustainable high performance.
About You
This role is likely to suit you if you:
have approximately 3–7 years PAE in Employment Law, or an employment focus within a broader practice
want Employment & Industrial Law to become your genuine specialisation
enjoy taking ownership of files and client relationships
can manage matters proactively and drive them forward
value strong technical support without wanting to be micromanaged
want to build your professional profile and contribute to the growth of the Workplace team
are commercially minded and comfortable advising business clients
have high professional standards and care about giving practical, useful advice.
Curious about what you could build here?
If you are an Employment Lawyer, or a lawyer with employment experience who is ready to specialise, we would like to hear from you.
We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and identities.
