We’re one of Australia’s most trusted brands. Being Member-owned, every decision we make has people and our community at its heart. From our legendary Roadside assistance to electric vehicle charging networks, holiday parks and lodges, car rentals, harbour transport, and ocean cruising we are striving to make a difference that contributes to a brighter shared future for all Australians.
Forget what you thought you knew about the NRMA – take a look on the inside and you’ll discover that life with us is more than just a job – it’s your chance to make a difference together.
What You'll Do
As an Energy Solutions Engineer with NRMA Energy, you will work across the engineering lifecycle of electric vehicle charging and distributed energy projects, from evaluating prospective sites and developing concept solutions through to grid connection, detailed design, delivery, commissioning and operational support.
You will solve practical engineering challenges involving high-power DC charging, electrical distribution, grid capacity and, where relevant, solar photovoltaic systems, battery energy storage and microgrids. Working with internal teams, distribution network service providers (DNSPs), consultants, contractors and equipment suppliers, you will help turn complex sites into safe, accessible and commercially viable energy assets.
This role will suit an engineer who enjoys combining technical design, field investigation and stakeholder engagement, and who wants to see their engineering decisions translated into nationally significant infrastructure.
Based in Sydney or Brisbane, this permanent full-time role offers significant flexibility to work from home, balanced with planned travel to project sites across Australia.
Your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Conduct site feasibility inspections to gather information about power supply options, existing electrical infrastructure, underground services, and EV charging bay layouts.
- Develop site feasibility proposals that include concept layouts, power solutions, and capital cost estimates.
- Complete desktop evaluations of candidate locations and coordinate or support field inspection activities.
- Prepare and submit DNSP enquiries and applications and coordinate technical engagement through connection assessment and approval processes.
- Develop concept and detailed electrical designs, drawings, calculations, equipment requirements and technical documentation.
- Review engineering designs, identify coordination issues, and provide clear technical input and recommendations.
- Prepare concept designs and technical scopes for requests for quotation in collaboration with delivery and procurement teams.
- Work with partners to deliver, test and commission EV charging and energy infrastructure assets.
- Contribute to the development of technical standards, procedures, CAD templates, and reusable design assets.
- Apply and advocate for inclusive and accessible design principles in EV charging infrastructure.
What You'll Bring
- A recognised Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline.
- Demonstrated post-graduate engineering experience contributing to the design or delivery of grid-connected electrical infrastructure, distributed energy or comparable projects.
- Experience preparing electrical designs, calculations, drawings and technical documentation.
- Working knowledge of Australian electrical installation requirements and the ability to identify and apply relevant legislation, codes and standards.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
- The ability to prioritise work across multiple projects, communicate risks early and meet agreed commitments.
- A practical safety mindset and commitment to quality, collaboration and continuous improvement.
- The ability to undertake planned travel to project sites across Australia.
Highly regarded:
- Design or delivery of high-power DC EV charging infrastructure.
- Battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar photovoltaic systems, and microgrids.
- DNSP connection enquiries, applications, and technical engagement.
- AutoCAD or similar engineering drawing software.
- Electrical cost estimating, commissioning, fault investigation, or technical assurance.
- Development of technical standards, design templates, or controlled engineering documentation.
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ).
- Experience supporting or mentoring developing engineers.
