Engineering Assistant — Solar PV & Residential/Multifamily (Part-Time · Remote · Colombia)
Company: HomEnergy® (a trade name/DBA of HOM ENGINEERING LLC) Type: Part-time · Independent contractor Location: Remote — Colombia-based candidates only Compensation: USD $600 / month Schedule: ~20 hrs/week, overlapping U.S. Eastern Time (to be confirmed) Language: English is mandatory — B2 minimum, written and spoken. Non-negotiable.
Company Description
HomEnergy® (a trade name/DBA of HOM ENGINEERING LLC, a Connecticut-registered company) delivers smart energy infrastructure solutions across the U.S. Northeast, combining Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, and financial consulting for solar power, energy storage, and electrical contracting projects. We advise clients on how to structure and execute energy projects — we are a technical and advisory partner, not a lender or funding source.
We work lean, we work accurately, and we work as a cross-border team. This role offers direct exposure to real U.S. clean energy projects, from design through permitting to Permission to Operate (PTO).
Role Description
Part-time, fully remote drafting role for a Colombia-based professional. You will produce permit-ready 2D AutoCAD plan sets for residential and multifamily solar PV and electrical projects in the United States, working under the direct guidance of a senior electrical engineer.
This is a hands-on drafting role — you will spend your time in AutoCAD, not in administration. Colombia shares the U.S. Eastern Time zone (±1 hour), so you collaborate with the team in real time. No overnight shifts.
Responsibilities
Draft and revise full plan sets: site plans, roof and module layouts, one-line and three-line diagrams, equipment elevations, attachment details, placard and labeling sheets.
Convert Aurora Solar / Helioscope outputs and site survey data into dimensioned, submission-quality drawings.
Apply HomEnergy CAD standards: title blocks, layers, blocks, xrefs, viewports, plot styles, PDF publishing.
Execute redline cycles from internal review and from AHJ or utility plan-check comments.
Maintain drawing registers, revision logs, and file naming discipline.
Run QA/QC checks against the drafting checklist before every release.
Qualifications
Required
English at B2 or above, written and spoken. All drawings, codes, standards, and team communication are in English. This is a hard requirement and will be tested during selection.
Currently enrolled in, or within ~12 months of completing, a program in Electrical, Electromechanical, or Civil Engineering, Architecture, or Drafting/CAD Technology — or a recent graduate.
Demonstrated 2D AutoCAD proficiency: layers, blocks, xrefs, dimensioning, layouts/viewports, plot styles. Portfolio required.
Ability to read and interpret electrical and architectural drawings.
Legally resident in Colombia and able to invoice as an independent contractor.
Reliable high-speed internet and a computer that runs AutoCAD smoothly.
Precision and the discipline to follow a CAD standard exactly.
Preferred — we will train
Exposure to the National Electrical Code (NEC/NFPA 70), especially Article 690, or to U.S. permitting drawings.
Familiarity with Bluebeam Revu, Revit, SketchUp, Aurora Solar, or Helioscope.
Basic understanding of PV components: modules, inverters, optimizers, racking, battery storage.
What You Gain
Paid entry into the U.S. solar market, with real projects from day one.
Mentorship from an electrical engineer (B.Sc., M.Sc., CAPM®) and structured training in NEC compliance and U.S. permitting workflows — knowledge that is scarce and highly marketable in Latin America.
A professional portfolio, a certificate of experience, and a defined path to increased scope and compensation based on performance.
Selection Process & How to Apply
CV and CAD portfolio (PDF, max 10 pages) → timed drafting exercise (~2 hrs) → 30-minute interview conducted in English → 30-day trial period against defined delivery targets.
Send your CV and portfolio to [application email — to be confirmed], subject line: CAD Drafting Assistant — Colombia. Applications without a portfolio will not be reviewed.
Terms
Independent contractor engagement, not employment. USD $600/month paid against monthly invoice via international transfer. Contractor is responsible for their own taxes and social security contributions under Colombian law. Subject to a signed services agreement covering confidentiality, data protection, and IP assignment.
