Job Title: Engineering Manager
Location: Belfast, Northern Ireland
Work Arrangement: Hybrid In-Office
Position Overview: Biller Genie is changing how software gets built. Our engineers work in small, autonomous pods and use agentic engineering tools such as Claude Code as a core part of how they specify, build, test and review software. We are looking for an Engineering Manager who has lived this shift personally and can lead others through it.
You will line manage engineers across multiple pods, owning their performance, growth and wellbeing while making sure we ship reliable, secure software into a regulated payments environment. You will bring strong people leadership, a credible C#/.NET background and genuine fluency in AI-assisted development, so you can coach engineers to get the most from these tools, set the standards that keep quality high, and tell real productivity gains apart from noise.
This is a role for someone who wants to define what great engineering management looks like when agents are part of the team.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
- Provide day-to-day line management for engineers across multiple pods, including 1:1s, objective setting, performance management and career progression aligned to our engineering career framework
- Lead the adoption of agentic engineering across your pods, making tools such as Claude Code, Codex and Cursor a normal, well-governed part of how work is specified, built, tested and reviewed
- Champion the specification as the primary engineering artefact, ensuring work is broken into clearly specified units that are small enough to review properly, whether the code is written by an engineer or an agent
- Set and uphold quality, security and code review standards for AI-assisted delivery, with human accountability for everything that reaches production in a regulated payments environment
- Coach engineers to work effectively alongside AI, building their skills in context engineering, task decomposition and critically evaluating agent output, as well as their wider technical and career development
- Use delivery and quality data (flow, cycle time, defect rates, team health) to understand where AI is genuinely improving outcomes and where it is not, and act on what you find
- Drive continuous improvement grounded in LEAN principles, identifying and removing waste from how your pods plan, build and release software
- Partner with Product, Architecture and Engineering leadership to translate business objectives into well-sequenced, deliverable plans
- Remove blockers and advocate for your teams, ensuring they have the clarity, tooling and support they need to deliver
- Stay close to the technical work, engaging in architectural discussions and code review with enough hands-on credibility to guide and challenge your teams
- Play a leading role in hiring, including assessing candidates' ability to work effectively with AI tools, and raise the bar for engineering talent across the organisation
- Perform other duties as required by Management
Essential Criteria:
- BSc or MSc in Computer Science or a related discipline, OR equivalent commercial experience
- 1 to 2 years' minimum direct line management experience of software engineers, with formal responsibility for performance reviews, career development and managing underperformance
- 5+ years' hands-on commercial development experience with C# and .NET
- Hands-on familiarity with agentic engineering tools such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, used regularly in your own engineering work rather than only evaluated or observed
- Sound judgement on the strengths and limits of AI-generated code, including its implications for quality, security, maintainability and code review
- Proven track record of delivering production software using modern practices, including CI/CD, automated testing and peer code review
- Experience developing and retaining engineers, including coaching high performers and addressing performance issues fairly and promptly
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to write clear, unambiguous specifications and to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders
- Solid understanding of software architecture, design patterns and technical debt management
- Experience with cloud technologies, preferably Azure
- Legal right to work in the UK
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience leading the adoption of AI development tools across a team, including defining standards, guardrails and ways of measuring impact
- Experience extending agentic tools for a team, for example through MCP servers, shared rules or context files, custom commands, or AI-assisted steps in CI pipelines
- Experience with spec-driven or test-first approaches to AI-assisted development
- Experience in financial services, payments or another regulated environment (e.g. PCI DSS, SOC 2)
- Experience applying LEAN principles and flow or DORA metrics to software delivery
- Experience with Azure Service Bus, Azure Functions, .NET Aspire or React
- Experience scaling engineering teams and establishing engineering practices in a fast-growing business
- A relevant cloud certification
What We Offer:
- Private health insurance
- Group life death benefit
- Auto-enrollment pension with employer contributions matched to 5%
- 25 days holiday per year
- 10 statutory/bank holidays per year
- Opportunities for professional growth and development
- A collaborative and innovative work environment
