Join us as we work to create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.

The Engineering Manager, Patient Solutions is a people-first leader who builds engaged, high-performing teams, develops a deep understanding of customers and their needs, and creates the structure and clarity to deliver high-quality patient-facing products predictably. This hybrid role, based in Austin, TX is responsible for team leadership, delivery execution, technical partnership, and cross-functional alignment in a regulated healthcare environment. The position helps shape engineering operating practices, team metrics, and how the organization applies AI-assisted development. This role reports to the Director of Engineering.

Team Summary

Patient Solutions builds patient-facing web, iOS, and Android experiences that modernize engagement and access workflows for athenahealth practices, including payments and other patient-facing workflows. The Engineering Manager leads a team of 6–10 junior and senior engineers organized into parallel pods, owning people development and dependable delivery across multiple workstreams. Working closely with Product, UX, Architecture, and peer Engineering teams, the manager aligns priorities, removes blockers, and helps deliver high-quality software in a regulated healthcare environment. The role combines people leadership with technical partnership, contributing to architecture, incident follow-up, and effective AI-assisted development practices.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Own the engineering team’s delivery, including prioritization, staffing, planning, risk management, execution, and quality; proactively identify dependencies, remove blockers, and adjust plans as conditions change.
  • Build and lead an engaged, high-performing engineering team by setting clear expectations, connecting each person’s work to meaningful outcomes, recognizing contributions, providing direct and timely feedback, and creating an inclusive environment in which people can do their best work.
  • Hire, coach, and develop engineers; support their career growth; manage performance fairly and consistently; and make thoughtful staffing and team-structure decisions.
  • Partner with Product, UX, internal users, and engineering leaders to understand customer needs, influence roadmaps, align priorities, and manage cross-team dependencies.
  • Guide technical direction by collaborating with architects and senior or principal engineers on design trade-offs and implementation approaches.
  • Define and track engineering excellence metrics, such as delivery predictability, quality, and team health.
  • Ensure that engineering practices and product delivery meet applicable security, privacy, compliance, and accessibility requirements.
  • Support adoption of AI-assisted development practices for yourself and within the organization, including identifying practical ways to improve planning, delivery, and team effectiveness.
  • Serve as incident commander for your team, providing escalation support, representing customer needs, guiding debugging and root-cause analysis, translating findings into architecture and process improvements, and participating in retrospectives to strengthen future response and prevent recurrence.
  • Balance delivery commitments with management of technical debt, system reliability, and long-term maintainability.

Additional Job Responsibilities

  • Support onboarding and ramp-up for new team members.
  • Represent the team in cross-functional planning, roadmap discussions, and dependency management.
  • Establish clear operating norms, engineering practices, and documentation that improve communication, decision-making, and execution.

Expected Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2+ years of software engineering people-management experience with a demonstrated ability to hire, motivate, coach, and develop engineers while creating an inclusive, engaged, and accountable team culture.
  • Strong delivery-management skills, including organizing parallel workstreams, tracking milestones and dependencies, identifying and mitigating risks, and communicating progress clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A demonstrated product mindset, with experience influencing and coordinating across Product, Design/UX, Architecture, and Engineering without direct authority.
  • Sufficient technical fluency to effectively participate in architecture, system design, implementation, quality, and other trade-off discussions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools and evaluating their use in engineering workflows.

Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with web, iOS, and/or Android delivery environments.
  • Experience in the healthcare industry.
  • Experience using iterative delivery practices and metrics to improve predictability, quality, and team effectiveness.
  • Experience managing multiple teams, pods, or parallel engineering workstreams.

Expected Compensation

$156,000 - $266,000
