Job Title: Engineering Project Manager
Job Description:
The Engineering Project Manager is an advanced individual contributor in Research, Development, & Engineering (RDE). The role independently manages complex, multidisciplinary engineering projects within delegated authority, integrates technical and business execution, and works toward project scope, schedule, cost, and performance objectives. Assignments may include power conversion, power distribution, and related product development projects. The same skills, knowledge, experience, and qualifications apply across assignments.
The role reports to the Manager, RDE Project Engineering, and has no direct reports. The Engineering Project Manager leads through project and cross-functional coordination. The designated program leader retains accountability for overall program results, program review gates, and alignment among senior stakeholders. Engineering technical leads retain technical design approval. The position does not own portfolio prioritization, people management, or department-wide governance.
In this role you will:
- Independently lead assigned complex, multidisciplinary engineering projects within delegated authority and Trystar’s established project-management standards. Own project scope, integrated resource-backed schedules, milestones, spending, and coordination of technical and business workstreams. Plan day-to-day execution, maintain clear deliverable ownership, and hold matrix team members accountable while respecting the technical authority of engineering leads and subject-matter experts.
- Integrate mechanical, electrical, controls, software, manufacturing, sourcing, quality, compliance, and commercial activities as applicable. Align requirements and interfaces across workstreams and maintain traceability through design reviews, verification, validation, and engineering change control, including ECR, ECO, and management of change (MOC). Coordinate commercialization and launch readiness, handoff to business functions for normal operations, and lessons learned. Technical leads retain design approval authority.
- Develop and maintain integrated, resource-backed schedules, milestones, financial forecasts, and spending reports. Align scope and requirements with available resources, identify dependencies and critical paths, and make the effects of changes visible. Manage multiple projects or major workstreams, prioritize according to risk, customer commitments, and resource availability, and identify schedule conflicts early. Work with functional leaders to resolve execution barriers and evaluate options using technical, cost, schedule, quality, resource, and customer considerations.
- Use structured problem solving to identify root causes, assess alternatives, recommend corrective actions, and resolve project-level issues. Maintain risk, issue, and decision records, assign owners, and follow through on mitigation and resolution. Make decisions within approved scope, budget, schedule, and risk authority, and escalate significant business risks, major scope changes, and enterprise-level tradeoffs. Coordinate technology assessments with technical leads to evaluate feasibility, maturity, alternatives, and implementation risk, and translate findings into project assumptions, recommendations, and decision points.
- Prepare and report progress, scope, schedule, cost, performance, risks, issues, decisions, and recommendations to functional leaders and senior stakeholders at established cadences, at least monthly. Maintain consistent status, risk, issue, decision, and milestone records. Lead project-level stakeholder communication, keep information timely, accurate, appropriately vetted, and internally aligned, and escalate strategically sensitive, enterprise-level, or high-risk communications as appropriate.
- Apply and reinforce established governance, requirements management, integrated scheduling, risk and issue registers, decision logs, design reviews, health checks, reporting cadences, escalation paths, and lessons learned. Identify process gaps and contribute practical feedback and improvement recommendations for Project Engineering tools, processes, standards, and practices without owning department-wide governance or standards.
- Provide accurate project data for portfolio reviews, identify cross-project dependencies and resource constraints, and participate in scenario analysis. Recommend project-level options and escalate cross-project resource conflicts to Staff or Principal Project Engineers and functional leaders. Support those engineers on the highest-risk, strategically significant, or multi-program initiatives with clearly defined ownership of assigned workstreams, deliverables, decisions, and milestones. Portfolio prioritization and organization-wide resource allocation remain outside this role’s authority.
- Provide informal, project-focused coaching on tools and processes, risk and resource planning, scope and schedule management, issue resolution, stakeholder communication, and lessons learned. Support onboarding and training of new project team members as assigned, and foster teamwork aligned with Trystar’s values. This role does not own formal staff competency development or people management.
Qualifications:
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in engineering or a similar technical field, or a bachelor’s or higher degree in a business-related field. Current CAPM, CPPM, or equivalent project-management certification is required at the time of hire. HRBP and Talent Acquisition must confirm equivalency during screening; active progress toward a PMP is preferred and does not replace the current certification requirement.
- 7+ years leading projects in engineering, R&D, technology, product development, or a combination of these environments. Demonstrated ability to independently lead complex, multidisciplinary engineering projects and oversee integrated product-development execution. Business acumen, cross-functional business experience, experience with project scheduling and reporting tools, and a proven record of influencing without authority are required.
Preferred qualifications
- A master’s degree in engineering or business, or equivalent experience, and active progress toward a PMP are preferred. A record of driving technology or products through commercialization, effective communication with stakeholders at all corporate levels, and the ability to informally coach project personnel are also preferred.
- Experience in Agile, Waterfall, and hybrid project environments; management of external vendors, suppliers, or development partners; and familiarity with Trystar technologies and processes are preferred.
Skills:
- Required skills include effective communication, organization, interpersonal relationships, and structured problem solving. Apply critical thinking, disciplined time management, and influence without authority to align stakeholders and translate technical and business information into clear project decisions. Experience with the Microsoft 365 suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams, and SharePoint, is required.
- Preferred tool experience includes Microsoft Planner and Project; AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot, Claude, or ChatGPT; and Mindomo or similar mindmapping tools.
Success measures
Success is measured by credible integrated, resource-backed plans and spending forecasts; timely resolution or escalation of risks and issues; clear decisions, project artifacts, and stakeholder communications; and effective integration of design reviews, verification, validation, change control, and commercialization. Consistent use of established RDE practices, disciplined management of multiple priorities, and delivery of assigned workstreams are expected.
Work environment
- The default location is Burnsville, MN, with a hybrid working model requiring at least one full office day per week. Hybrid work from another established Trystar site is allowed. Fully remote work is considered only for exceptional candidates. Management may adjust the working model as business needs change.
- The role may require up to 20% domestic or international travel.
