Job Description

We are looking for an Enteric Student Investigator to support disease surveillance, prevention, and public health investigations related to foodborne and waterborne illnesses. This position will be Part-Time and Hybrid in Indianapolis, IN. All work must be completed within the state of Indiana.

Only work authorizations that will not require sponsorship now or in the future will be considered.

What You'll Do

• Conduct medical record searches to support enteric disease investigations
• Interview patients by telephone using standardized questionnaires
• Collect detailed exposure and food history information from individuals diagnosed with foodborne illnesses
• Contact healthcare providers, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities to obtain patient information
• Enter case investigation data into the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NBS)
• Enter and process infectious disease laboratory results received from laboratories and healthcare providers
• Communicate with local health department personnel regarding potential exclusion requirements from work, school, or daycare settings
• Support foodborne disease outbreak and cluster investigations as needed
• Assist with data analysis activities, program projects, and public health initiatives
• Participate in onboarding, training, and ongoing professional development opportunities throughout the program

What You'll Need

Required:

• Current enrollment in an accredited college or university program
• Ability to commit to a one-year assignment from September 2026 through August 2027
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to conduct professional phone interviews with patients and healthcare providers
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Proficiency with computers and data entry applications
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive health information appropriately
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities

Preferred:

• Coursework or academic experience in public health, epidemiology, biology, health sciences, nursing, environmental health, or a related field
• Experience conducting research, surveys, interviews, or data collection activities
• Experience with data analysis or database systems
• Familiarity with infectious disease surveillance or public health programs
• Previous customer service, call center, or healthcare-related experience

Physical Demands

• Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA and other federal, state, and local standards
• Ability to conduct repetitive tasks on a computer, utilizing a mouse, keyboard, and monitor
• Must be able to communicate with customers/team members over the phone and in person
• Sedentary work that involves sitting or remaining stationary most of the time with occasional need to move around the office to attend meetings, etc.

$15 per hour

The pay range for this position is listed above. Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including location, experience, and education. Benefit packages for this role will include 401k retirement account access. Employees in this role may also be entitled to paid sick leave and/or other paid time off as provided by applicable law.
