Here at BNZ, it's about more than just banking. We work together in an agile, energising environment to create innovative solutions through our promise "If you can imagine a better future, let's find a way."
We support wellbeing, flexible working and have a generous leave offering. There is the opportunity for growth, learning and career development. No two days are the same.
We are looking for an experienced Enterprise Architect to join our Tech Strategy & Architecture team.
Shape BNZ's payments architecture, connecting business strategy with practical delivery across people, processes, information, and technology.
This is an Auckland based hybrid role with three days in the office and two where you can work flexibility.
Mō te Tūranga | About the role
We sat down with the People Leader (who you would report to), who let us know the following about the role:
What are the responsibilities for this role?
- Set target states and transition roadmaps for domestic and international payments, merchant services, and open banking.
- Bring an industry-wide perspective to BNZ's payments strategy and architecture, anticipating regulatory and industry change, aligning with emerging standards and initiatives, and helping BNZ influence the future direction of the payments ecosystem.
- Guide integration across payment platforms, channels, customer and merchant records, core banking, ledgers, and external providers.
- Define reusable patterns for APIs, events, messaging, and batch processing, with data ownership, privacy controls, duplicate prevention, and safe retries.
- Define availability, performance, observability, and tested failover and recovery requirements across bank, scheme, and third-party services.
- Partner with specialists on identity, consents, and authorities, including mandates, delegated access, approval controls, and auditable revocation.
- Lead modernisation, migration, and decommissioning decisions, balancing customer value, cost, technical debt, and resilience. Explore emerging capabilities through controlled experimentation.
- Coach architects and delivery teams, provide design assurance, and escalate material risks and exceptions through agreed governance.
- Follow legislative, policy, and health and safety requirements, complete required training, and report risks, hazards, and incidents.
What is the team culture and environment like?
We value collaboration, constructive challenge, and clear decisions across business, technology, operations, and risk.
What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?
Improving how customers and merchants move money through practical modernisation and new payment choices.
What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity?
Balancing innovation with dependable services, regulatory obligations, legacy constraints, and delivery capacity while influencing teams and partners without direct authority.
What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role?
- Strategic and enterprise-wide thinking.
- Analytical problem-solving and sound judgement.
- Collaborative leadership and influence.
- Clear communication with business and technical audiences.
- A growth mindset, curiosity, and adaptability.
- Commitment to coaching and developing others.
- Customer focus and accountability for advice and outcomes.
What technical skills and experience are essential?
You will bring enterprise or solution architecture experience, including large-scale transformation, cloud computing, microservices, and secure integration, alongside experience delivering payment services.
You will understand New Zealand's payments environment, Payments NZ, card and account-to-account payments, merchant acquiring, and international payments. This includes scheme rules and certification, authorisation, clearing, settlement finality, liquidity, cut-off times, reconciliation, refunds, disputes, and chargebacks.
Knowledge of regulated open banking under the Customer and Product Data Act 2025 and associated standards is essential, alongside ISO 20022 messaging, fraud and scam prevention, sanctions screening, financial crime controls, and payment card security standards (PCI DSS).
You will distinguish authentication, consent, and authority to act, with experience in identity proofing, consent scope, expiry and withdrawal, account mandates, signatories, delegated authorities, transaction limits, separation of duties, and multiple approvals.
A relevant qualification or equivalent practical experience is expected. Financial services experience and familiarity with TOGAF or Zachman are desirable.
PLEASE NOTE: Advertising for this role closes Thursday 12 November at 11pm.
