We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Environmental Protection Department to support a variety of environmental protection programs at SLAC. The Environmental Protection Department manages facility-wide environmental regulatory permits and requirements in the areas of industrial wastewater, stormwater, air quality, spill prevention, control and countermeasures (SPCC), tiered permitting, NEPA, pollution prevention, remediation, among others, to ensure on-going compliance with local, California state, and federal environmental laws, regulations, and orders and DOE requirements. The team also works closely with site personnel to ensure work is carried out in compliance with applicable environmental requirements. Work will entail managing some environmental protection programs or program aspects and providing support to the environmental compliance team program managers as needed. Specific duties may include but not be limited to identifying and interpreting regulatory requirements, developing/continually improving policy, procedures, training and outreach materials for environmental compliance programs, preparing regulatory report deliverables, collecting, analyzing and managing data, interfacing with regulatory agencies, reviewing project plans and specifications to ensure compliance, partnering with site staff on environmental regulatory matters. Occasional field work may be required including soil, sediment, and water sampling, and conducting various compliance inspections including at construction sites, outdoor storage areas and other operational and research areas. Your specific responsibilities include: Under limited supervision, perform moderately complex technical work in a wide range of environmental disciplines to achieve compliance with SLAC's applicable environmental standards and governmental regulatory requirements. Develop, im­plement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures neces­sary to ensure environmental protection. May develop and conduct employee training, education, and awareness programs for assigned programs. Identify, assess, and monitor environmental hazards that could be present in the work area; recommend improvements to minimize environmental impacts and ensure compliance. Investigate incidents and complaints. Recommend improvements in processes. Assist in comprehensive compliance assurance reviews of policies, procedures, and prepare accompanying reports, documentation and evaluations. Provide technical advice and interpretation of various regulations and policies. May act as a lead or technical expert and provide direction to less experienced personnel. Complete accurate reports and manage assigned program deliverables. Other duties may also be assigned To be successful in this position you will bring: Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related scientific/engineering field and 3 years of progressively responsible experience in the environmental field is required. Master’s degree is desirable. Experience with interpreting and implementing regulatory requirements is strongly preferred, and experience with one or more of the following environmental areas is required: stormwater compliance, industrial wastewater compliance, air quality compliance with BAAD, CARB and EPA, zero waste, spill reporting, SPCC, TSCA, tiered permitting, SARA 313, CalARP, Environmental Management Systems. Demonstrated ability to conduct effective data analysis; ability to provide recommendations for risk control. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely. Ability to maintain appropriate current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and policy. Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s). Demonstrated organizational skills and detail orientation and ability to manage competing priorities. Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the work place. Recommend improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize hazard potential. Provide technical advice and university interpretation of various government regulations and university policies; maintain working knowledge of specific government regulations. May act as a lead or technical expert, and provide direction to less experienced personnel working on health/safety programs. Minimum Education : Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field Minimum Experience : Three years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/risk assessments, and data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely. Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies. Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).
