Environmental Planner Location: Multiple positions are available with flexible work arrangements, including hybrid opportunities within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and remote-based roles supporting projects across Ontario. About The Role – Join a Team Where Science Meets Innovation Reporting to the Management Team in Ontario, environmental planners play a key role in supporting ecological consulting services for a range of private and public sector clients across Ontario. As an Intermediate Environmental Planner, you’ll work as part of multidisciplinary teams supporting the planning, design and delivery of transportation, transit and other infrastructure projects across Ontario. You’ll contribute to environmental assessment and planning assignments from early planning through detailed design and construction, working closely with technical specialists, project managers, clients and regulatory agencies. What You’ll Do Coordinate environmental planning and assessment activities for transportation, transit, municipal and other infrastructure projects. Prepare environmental assessment and planning documents, including ESDs, TESRs, EPRs, DCRs, consultation plans and supporting technical materials. Coordinate multidisciplinary environmental studies and integrate input from technical specialists in natural heritage, fisheries and aquatic ecosystems, arboriculture, cultural heritage, archaeology, noise, air quality and hydrogeology. Review project designs and technical submissions to identify environmental issues, impacts, mitigation measures, commitments, permits and approvals. Support public, agency, municipal and stakeholder consultation activities, including notices, presentation materials, consultation records and responses to comments. Liaise with clients, design teams, technical specialists, contractors, municipalities, regulatory agencies and other government authorities. Track environmental commitments and project requirements through planning, design and, where applicable, construction. Assist with project management activities, including scope, schedule, budget and quality control. Contribute to proposals and other business development initiatives. The list of duties and responsibilities described above is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded/modified from time to time as required by the organization’s needs. What You Bring Education and Experience: A university degree in environmental planning, urban or land use planning, environmental studies, geography, environmental science or a related discipline. Minimum 5 years of relevant environmental planning experience, preferably in a consulting environment and with progressively increasing responsibility. Experience supporting environmental assessments for transportation, transit, municipal infrastructure or other complex infrastructure projects in Ontario. Experience working through multiple project phases, such as planning, preliminary design, detailed design and/or construction. Experience supporting public, agency and stakeholder consultation. Experience working with engineering/design teams to integrate environmental requirements and mitigation into project design. Experience with MTO, Metrolinx, municipal or other public-sector infrastructure projects is considered a strong asset. Experience with transit projects and the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) is considered an asset. Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Working knowledge of Ontario environmental assessment and planning processes, including the MTO Class Environmental Assessment process and/or Transit Project Assessment Process. Working knowledge of relevant federal, provincial and municipal environmental legislation, policies, standards and guidelines. Understanding of environmental impact assessment, mitigation, environmental commitments and permitting/approval requirements. Ability to interpret engineering drawings, design information and technical reports from an environmental planning perspective. Strong technical writing, document preparation and review skills, with the ability to clearly communicate complex environmental information. Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deliverables within project schedules and budgets. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with clients, technical specialists, engineers, contractors, regulatory agencies and other government authorities. Ability to identify environmental issues early, understand their implications for project delivery, and work collaboratively to develop practical solutions. Sound judgement, attention to detail and the ability to manage changing priorities, work independently and deliver high-quality work within tight timelines.
