Show job description
  • $85,000+ Super + Paid Overtime / TOIL
  • Large-scale contaminated land investigations
  • Clear pathway towards Project Management

As an Environmental Scientist in Contaminated Land, join a growing consultancy at a useful point in your career: you’re beyond graduate level, but you’re not expected to arrive as a finished Project Manager.

With around 2–3 years’ experience, you’ll sit between the junior team and experienced PMs. You’ll stay hands-on with fieldwork and reporting while gradually taking greater ownership of projects as your capability develops.

The project pipeline is getting bigger too. Current and recent work includes a 5-hectare industrial DSI covering soil, groundwater, vapour and surface water, an $800M+ renewable energy project, plus larger infrastructure projects and Tier 1 opportunities currently being tendered.

The Role

Around 2 days per week will typically be in the field, with the balance across reporting and project delivery.

You’ll:

  • Deliver PSI, DSI, validation and Acid Sulfate Soil investigations.
  • Undertake soil and groundwater sampling and environmental fieldwork.
  • Write technical reports with experienced senior review and support.
  • Build further exposure to RAPs and waste classifications.
  • Work across commercial, industrial, infrastructure and renewable energy projects.
  • Gradually take ownership of pieces of work and smaller projects as you develop.

Most fieldwork is around Sydney, Newcastle and surrounding areas, with no expectation of constant overnight or regional travel. Where practical, you can travel directly from home to site.

The Team

This is a small, growing consultancy where you’ll have experienced contaminated land people above you and junior consultants coming through underneath.

They want someone who can take a brief and get moving - not someone who needs every step mapped out. You don’t need to know everything, but you should be willing to research, ask questions and have a crack.

There’s genuine investment in development too. The business supports industry training, professional accreditations and ALGA involvement, including access to specialist technical training in areas such as Acid Sulfate Soils.

Hybrid working is available, alongside company vehicles, fuel cards, PPE, field equipment, laptop and phone. Overtime is paid, TOIL is available and there’s no regular weekend work.

Experience

  • Around 2–3 years’ environmental consulting experience.
  • Contaminated land experience across PSI/DSI, sampling and reporting.
  • Exposure to groundwater, Acid Sulfate Soils and validation; RAP or waste classification experience is useful.
  • Initiative and an appetite to take on more responsibility.

Salary starts from $85,000 + super, with paid overtime / TOIL.
