Executive Underwriter - Franchise Auto Dealers

At Utica National, our Franchise Auto Dealers division is one of our signature specialty businesses, providing tailored insurance solutions to automobile dealerships across the country.

We're seeking an experienced Executive Underwriter to join our Franchise Auto Dealers team. In this role, you'll evaluate complex dealership risks, partner with specialized agencies, and help drive profitable growth within one of the most dynamic segments of commercial insurance.

This is more than a traditional underwriting position. You'll serve as a trusted advisor to agents, influence portfolio performance, and help shape underwriting strategy within a highly specialized market. What You'll Do

As an Executive Underwriter, you will:

  • Underwrite complex new and renewal business within our Franchise Auto Dealers portfolio.
  • Evaluate dealership operations and exposures to determine risk acceptability, pricing, and coverage solutions.
  • Review submissions, applications, financial information, loss history, inspection reports, and supporting documentation to make sound underwriting decisions.
  • Manage a high-volume agency assignment with significant underwriting authority and responsibility.
  • Build strong partnerships with specialized agency customers while maintaining underwriting discipline and profitability.
  • Clearly communicate underwriting appetite, coverage solutions, pricing decisions, and risk assessment rationale to agency partners and internal stakeholders.
  • Analyze agency and portfolio performance to identify opportunities for profitable growth, retention improvement, and loss ratio management.
  • Participate in agency reviews and collaborate on production and profitability improvement plans.
  • Utilize business intelligence and reporting tools to monitor trends and evaluate portfolio results.
  • Stay informed on dealership industry trends, insurance marketplace developments, and competitor activity.
  • Serve as a trusted underwriting resource focused on balancing customer needs, agency relationships, and company profitability.

What Makes You Successful

We're looking for an underwriter who combines strong technical expertise with business acumen and relationship-building skills.

You may be a great fit if you have:

  • 5+ years of commercial lines middle market underwriting experience.

  • Experience underwriting complex commercial risks and managing agency relationships.

  • Strong knowledge of commercial insurance coverages, including:

    • General Liability
    • Workers Compensation
    • Commercial Property
    • Commercial Auto
  • Experience analyzing portfolio performance and identifying opportunities for profitable growth.

  • Excellent analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.

  • Strong communication and relationship management abilities.

  • A customer-focused and solution-oriented approach.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across teams.

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Compensation

Executive Commercial Lines Underwriter

$90,000 - $154,000

Senior Commercial Lines Underwriter

$73,500 - $111,000

Commercial Lines Underwriter

$57,000 - $90,000

Candidates may be considered for the Executive Underwriter, Senior Underwriter, or Underwriter level based on experience, technical expertise, and overall qualifications.

This position is eligible for participation in the Company's Variable Compensation Bonus Plan.

Final compensation is determined based on experience, geographic location, education, professional certifications, scope of responsibilities, and overall qualifications.
