Financial Controller

Remote - UK

TryHackMe is the world's biggest online cyber security training platform, with more than 8 million users across thousands of businesses and schools. We've never taken outside funding: we're fully bootstrapped, profitable, past $40M in revenue (2026), and run as a fully remote team of around 160. Our mission is to make the world more digitally secure.

The Role

TryHackMe runs a lean, high-performance finance team, and we're looking for a Financial Controller to own the Group's actuals and build the processes that let us keep scaling without adding headcount.

This is a build-and-solve role, not plug-and-play. Running the close and the weekly finance tasks is the baseline. The real job is spotting what the business will need next, redesigning processes before they break, and executing fast. We work AI-first across processes, reviews, reconciliations and reporting, so you'll be building workflows in Claude, not just Excel.

It's critical that you agree with our culture and way of working, as TryHackMe is not for everyone, so make sure to read this article before applying. You'll report directly into the Head of Finance, manage one Accountant who runs FinOps, and work closely with FP&A, People, Analytics, RevOps, Sales, CS and the SLT.

Primary Responsibilities include:

  • Month-end & Reporting: Own and evolve the close and key processes like revenue recognition, deferred revenue and accrued liabilities. Own P&L, balance sheet and cashflow accuracy and analysis, plus supporting schedules such as BS reconciliations. Push internal reporting further, including departmental reporting, so the business makes better decisions, and support ad hoc internal and external reporting.

  • FinOps & Team: Manage and develop the Accountant who runs FinOps (AR, AP and cash coding). Build scalable processes for high-volume quote-to-cash across both our B2C and B2B businesses.

  • AI-first Finance & Tooling: Own the finance tech stack, including spend management and AP/AR tooling, and own and evolve the Finance skills library in Claude. Automate anything that's repeated.

  • Fix Root Causes: Push problems back upstream to HR, RevOps and Analytics rather than fixing the same reconciling items every month. Drive cross-functional data integrity across Stripe, PayPal and Tableau/Hex.

  • Controls & Audit: Own financial controls and the annual audit end to end, from planning through fieldwork to reporting, working directly with our auditors with no material adjustments.

  • Corporation Tax & R&D: Manage annual CT (including quarterly instalments) and the R&D claim with external advisers. Coordinate technical leads, handle HMRC enquiries and reconcile the CT balance to the HMRC account.

  • Indirect Tax: Own UK VAT quarterly returns, international VAT and US sales tax, including registrations, monthly Stripe Tax files to our outsourced provider, review and approval of returns across 30+ jurisdictions, tracking payments, and periodic true-ups of the accrued liability.

  • Statutory & Company Admin: Handle Companies House filings and registered-office post, ONS surveys, dividend vouchers, withholding-tax and residency certificates for customers, and the US entity's compliance with its advisers.

This role is not right if you:

  • Want a plug-and-play role where the close is the whole job

  • Are happy fixing the same reconciling items every month rather than killing the root cause

  • Need to be chased, or look for someone else to blame when things slip

  • Bring open questions rather than recommendations

  • Would rather stay in Excel than build and run workflows in tools like Claude

  • Rely on others to catch errors in your work

  • Need clear structure and direction, or struggle to push back and manage upward

  • Can't explain finance simply to founders and non-finance teams

Requirements

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACA preferred; ACCA or CIMA considered) with 2+ years PQE

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, ideally across both practice and industry

  • Startup/scale-up experience in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment

  • Experience with high-volume B2C subscription and/or B2B SaaS (both is a strong plus)

  • A strong foundation in accounting principles and best practice

  • Strong Excel and light modelling skills

  • Demonstrable AI use in finance work: comfortable building and running workflows in tools like Claude

Nice-to-have:

  • Data analytics skills

  • Payment processor experience (Stripe, PayPal)
