Show job description

Electricity grids are undergoing the most significant transformation in a century. The shift to renewables, the proliferation of rooftop solar, batteries, and EVs, and the increasing complexity of distribution networks are forcing utilities to operate their grids in fundamentally new ways. Gridsight is the analytics platform that makes this possible.

Gridsight is a rapidly growing GridTech startup dedicated to accelerating global electrification and decarbonization. We are a vertical AI platform that enables electric utilities to modernize grid operations, accelerate interconnection, and unlock dynamic grid capacity. The opportunity is enormous.

We're embedded with over 50% of Australia's distribution networks and working with multiple top 10 utilities in the US. We just closed our Series B led by Insight Partners and Galvanize Climate, and we're on the path to build a truly generational utility software company.

We are a team of builders. What unites us is that we’re curious, hungry and obsessed with maximizing the impact we can deliver to Gridsight and the energy transition. If that sounds like you, come join us!

About the Role

As a Forward Deployed Power Engineer, you are the technical lead on our US utility engagements. You'll spend significant time onsite with customers, mapping their needs to Gridsight’s capabilities, building trust and credibility as a subject matter expert, and driving technical strategy and delivery.

You will work alongside Engagement Managers, who own overall implementation, and Account Executives, who own the commercial relationship. You’ll also partner closely with Customer Data Analysts and Customer Data Engineers to deliver high-impact analyses. You’ll also be the technical voice of the customer with Product, informing what we build next and testing new capabilities before deploying them with customers.

Gridsight runs an AI-native stack that gives the team access to best-in-class tooling across data infrastructure, orchestration, and AI-assisted development. Staying ahead of the curve is part of the job.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pre-sales and Discovery
    • Represent Gridsight as the lead technical authority in sales calls and customer meetings, from engineers to the C-Suite, advising utilities on how Gridsight can address their needs.
    • Lead technical discovery to understand utilities’ network models, data, software stack, and the operational and regulatory problems they need to solve.
    • Assess what is feasible off-the-shelf, what will require new Product or analytics capabilities, and where the technical risks are.
    • Partner with the commercial team to draft technical components of RFIs, RFPs, and funding and program applications.
    • Present case studies and technical findings, often alongside customers, at industry conferences, working groups and webinars.
  • Implementation, Onboarding, and Technical Delivery
    • Partner with the Account Executive and Engagement Manager to scope each engagement: the key customer problems, the technical approach to solve them, and what we need to deliver to win the next phase.
    • Own overall technical strategy for customer engagements, including deploying new and existing Product capabilities and leveraging Gridsight’s grid modeling workbench to deliver the highest-value customer insights and outcomes.
    • Act as the trusted technical advisor to utility planning and engineering teams.
    • Lead technical onboarding sessions with utility teams, educating them on how Gridsight fits into their existing engineering workflows and tooling.
    • Direct the work of Customer Data Analysts on each engagement, providing technical direction and final approval for dashboards, visualizations and other consultative deliverables.
  • Product and Continuous Improvement
    • Bring what you learn on engagements back to Gridsight's product and engineering teams, turning field issues into clear requirements for new features and tooling. Distinguish one-off requests from repeatable customer signals, and push for the highest-value capabilities.
    • Shape and test new grid modeling tooling as it rolls out, in partnership with Product, and teach other Gridsight engineers and analysts how and when to use it.
    • Encode repeatable study methods (hosting capacity, EV/DER impact, interconnection screens) as reusable agent skills and workflows, so each engagement makes the next one faster.
    • Define how we validate AI-generated engineering analysis: build known-answer test cases and evals, check agent outputs against first principles and manual studies, and set the bar for what trusted agentic engineering looks like.

What You'll Bring

  • 3+ years of experience in power engineering or distribution and transmission planning at a utility, consultancy, or grid technology vendor.
  • Hands-on fluency with agentic coding tools (e.g. Claude Code, Codex): writing and maintaining context files, skills and workflows, connecting tools via MCP, and debugging agent traces when a run goes off the rails.
  • Experience leading customer-facing delivery of grid software and/or engineering studies.
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems, or a related engineering field.
  • Strong grounding in distribution and transmission systems, including power flow modeling, hosting capacity, DER integration, new load/generation interconnection, and demand forecasting.
  • Experience working with utility data from GIS, CIS, AMI and SCADA systems.
  • Strong Python and SQL, used mostly to review, debug and steer AI-generated code and analysis, plus comfort with git and code review.
  • Experience deploying enterprise utility software such as DERMS and ADMS, either as a utility engineer or as a consultant,
  • A self-starter with an impact-oriented mindset suited to a fast-moving startup: you judge your success in terms of customer outcomes, take initiative, and take ownership of the technical outcome.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites, including multi-day onsites.

Nice to Have

  • Rapidly scaling venture-backed company on the ground floor.
  • Highly competitive salary, equity, and comprehensive benefits package.
  • A mission that matters in an industry going through its biggest transformation in a century.
  • A team worth working with — big hustle, low ego, great vibes — that's motivated by solving difficult, meaningful problems.
  • Hybrid work environment from our offices in San Francisco, CA and Austin, Texas, plus annual retreats to the Australian mothership.
