About ESS

ESS is one of the nation’s leading education staffing companies, partnering with more than 1,200 school districts to provide substitute teachers, paraprofessionals, clinicians and other K-12 staff. Every school day, ESS fills tens of thousands of assignments that keep classrooms running for millions of students.

About the Role

We’re looking for an FP&A Analyst to help ESS understand its financial performance and plan for growth. You’ll support budgeting and forecasting, maintain financial models, analyze variances and prepare reporting for business leaders. This is a hands-on, analytical role for someone early in their FP&A career who wants to build strong forecasting and modeling skills.

It’s a role for someone who asks “Why?” when a number moves and wants to turn data into clear, useful insights.

Department: Finance

Reports to: VP of FP&A / VP of Finance / CFO

Location: Remote - Must live on the East Coast

Travel: Up to 20%

FLSA status: Exempt, full time

Why This Role

  • Work closely with the FP&A team and operational leaders across a national business.
  • Learn how a multi-location, labor-driven company plans and measures performance.
  • Build skills in forecasting, modeling and Workday Adaptive Planning.
  • A clear path to grow into a Senior FP&A Analyst role.

What You’ll Do

Planning and Forecasting

  • Support the annual budget and long-range planning processes by gathering inputs, preparing schedules and updating models.
  • Help prepare monthly, quarterly and annual forecasts in partnership with business leaders.
  • Maintain driver-based models for revenue, labor costs and expenses, and update assumptions as the business changes.

Analysis and Reporting

  • Compare actual results for revenue, labor costs, margins and expenses against budget, forecast and prior year.
  • Research variances and summarize the business drivers behind them.
  • Prepare monthly reporting packages, dashboards and presentation materials for the FP&A team and senior management.
  • Complete ad hoc analysis requests for operations and finance leaders.

Systems and Process

  • Use Workday Adaptive Planning for budgeting, forecasting and reporting.
  • Pull and reconcile data from ERP, BI and operational systems.
  • Help automate manual reports and improve the accuracy and consistency of financial data.
  • Document reporting processes so they can be repeated and reviewed.

Business Support

  • Support analysis for pricing, investments and other strategic projects under the direction of senior team members.
  • Identify trends and opportunities to improve profitability and efficiency.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 2–4 years of experience in FP&A, corporate finance, accounting or a related analytical role.
  • Experience supporting budgets, forecasts or variance analysis.
  • Strong Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups and building clear, well-structured models.
  • Comfort working with large data sets and checking data for accuracy.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including explaining numbers to non-finance colleagues.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage several deadlines at once.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Workday Adaptive Planning or another planning tool.
  • Workday ERP, Power BI, Tableau or other BI tools.
  • Experience in a staffing, services or other labor-driven business.
  • Interest in growing into a senior FP&A role.

Is This You?

If you enjoy answering questions like “What’s driving this?” and “What happens if we change this?”, and you want to grow your FP&A skills on a team where your work is seen and used, we’d like to hear from you.
