About Us

Most accomplished professionals can tell you what they have done. Far fewer can tell you what they are hard-wired to do, or why some mandates feel natural while others slowly wear them down.

Rutherford International brings together referral networks, psychometric data analytics, behavioural science and game theory. We use them to build a collaborative global community of high-potential and proven professionals across the industry sectors and leadership functions we serve. Individual and corporate members have access to private equity deal-makers, executive search, the Rutherford Talent Clearinghouse™ for fractional and independent consulting engagements, and a knowledge network of industry mentors.

Every path begins with the RutherfordINTEL™ Assessment. Built on Personality Analytics 4.0™, it reveals your personality type and leadership style. It also shows how that hard-wiring shapes the way you think, decide, lead and perform. The science has been applied to more than 40,000 professionals spanning 1,500+ roles, with 85% predictive accuracy for performance potential.

See what that intelligence looks like in practice. This certified Rutherford Talent Guild™ member profile is an example of how we present our members to employers: confidentially, by membership number, and backed by science.

Job Description

This is a remote position.

Fractional CFO — Growth and Succession

This Evergreen Career Profile invites independent finance leaders to register for consideration for the Rutherford Talent Clearinghouse™, a curated, searchable directory of independent fractional executives and management consultants. It is an expression of professional interest, not an advertisement for a current employment vacancy.

Perhaps you want to build a portfolio of ongoing chief financial officer relationships with owner-managed businesses. Perhaps you are an experienced senior finance leader preparing to go fractional, or an established fractional CFO who wants to be known for the situations you handle best. This profile is for finance leaders who want to provide executive-level financial leadership, on a part-time and ongoing basis, to privately owned businesses at a defining moment: a generational succession, a management buyout, a financing, or the move from founder-led finance to formal governance.

We welcome serving and former chief financial officers, finance directors, vice-presidents of finance and other senior finance leaders whose responsibility has reached the executive level, whether or not they have yet worked fractionally. Registration records where you are now; curator review explores where you want to go and the evidence that supports it. Registration is not itself an assessment. It begins a professional evaluation in distinct stages: your assessed performance potential, your demonstrated professional readiness and your suitability for a particular mandate.

The mandate

This is a specialist profile within F01 Fractional Executive. A growth and succession fractional CFO provides ongoing, strategic financial leadership on a part-time basis to one or more organisations. It is an executive mandate: distinct from bookkeeping, controllership and occasional advice, and different from interim cover, where an executive steps in, often full-time, for a defined period.

The organisations in view are privately owned, past their start-up years and growing. Their finance function often has to mature faster than the business can justify a full-time chief financial officer. Venture-capital fundraising may form part of the work, but it does not define it.

Representative work

  • Cash-flow forecasting and financial planning the owner can plan around
  • Management reporting that informs real decisions
  • Funding strategy, and relationships with lenders, investors and advisers
  • Financial controls and governance suited to the size of the business
  • Financial preparation for, and decision support through, a succession, buyout or financing
  • Strengthening, and working through, the existing finance team

Accountability within the mandate

  • Accountable deliverables within the agreed mandate: forecasts, management reporting, controls, decision papers and lender materials. You accept responsibility for these, subject to the authority, resources and access to information agreed with the client.
  • Outcomes achieved jointly with finance staff, operational leaders and owners: forecast accuracy, stronger cash conversion, timely closes and better margins. These are shared, not guaranteed.
  • Outcomes you influence that depend on lenders, investors, buyers, markets or owner decisions: financings, buyouts, successions and enterprise value.

Growth and succession is not turnaround

This profile concerns businesses that are building value and preparing for a transition, not businesses under acute liquidity, covenant or lender pressure. Financial stabilisation is profiled separately as F24 Turnaround CFO, and enterprise-wide recovery as F25 Chief Turnaround Officer / Chief Restructuring Officer. Experience in growth finance is not treated as evidence of turnaround experience, or the reverse. If your strongest work has been in stabilisation or restructuring, a curator may consider you under those profiles instead, or as well.

How engagements vary

No single arrangement is required. Time commitment, on-site or remote working, reporting line, decision authority and whether other clients are served are agreed with each client and recorded for each engagement. Many fractional CFOs report to the owner or chief executive and serve more than one client; others work with one. A single client does not make an arrangement any less fractional.

  • Fractional (the core of this profile): ongoing, part-time executive responsibility for the finance function.
  • Related option, advisory: periodic counsel to an owner, chief executive or board, without day-to-day executive responsibility.
  • Related option, consulting: a defined finance project under a fixed-scope statement of work, such as preparing for a financing or designing a governance framework.

Advisory and consulting work are related engagement options, not the same as holding ongoing fractional executive responsibility, and each is considered on its own terms. Permanent chief financial officer appointments are considered separately through the Rutherford Talent Guild™. Full-time interim cover is not the focus of this profile.

What we are asking

The question is not simply whether you could work as a fractional CFO. It is whether you have the demonstrated capability, or the assessed potential, to perform at a high level in an appropriate growth and succession mandate, and what professional development may be needed to achieve that outcome.

For accepted members, a curator leads the development and review of a concise statement of the contribution you offer. For ongoing fractional executive work, this is the Rutherford Fractional Thesis™: the problem you address, the organisations in which your experience is relevant, the continuing responsibilities you can assume and the evidence supporting that proposition. For advisory and consulting propositions, the Rutherford Consultant Thesis™ sets out when a client should engage you, for what defined contribution, and why. Neither Thesis is required at registration, and an approved summary is shared with clients only with your consent.

The Rutherford Talent Clearinghouse™

The Rutherford Talent Clearinghouse™ is a curated directory of independent fractional executives and management consultants, designed to be searched by subscribing organisations and contracting firms. Membership rests on assessed functional potential, reviewed specialist experience and a curator's judgement of contextual suitability. Accepted members appear through a curator-approved profile, published only with their consent. Subscribing clients can search the directory and approach members directly, post a requirement for members to respond to, or ask a curator for a shortlist. Engagements are agreed directly between the member and the client, and members remain independent. Alongside the directory, Rutherford continues to manage the relationship: clarifying the situations you handle best, identifying development priorities and, where there is a credible fit, promoting you selectively. The opportunity is an event in the relationship. It is not the relationship itself.

Clearinghouse or Guild?

Rutherford Talent Solutions™ has two membership communities. The difference lies in how work is engaged.

  • Rutherford Talent Clearinghouse™: independent engagements. For fractional executives and management consultants who contract their expertise. Clients find members through the searchable directory, a posted requirement or a curator's shortlist, and engage them directly for ongoing part-time responsibility, advisory work or a defined project. A member may work with several clients, and engagements can begin, renew or end as needs change.
  • Rutherford Talent Guild™: employed appointments. For executives pursuing permanent leadership appointments within an organisation. Rutherford manages a longer-term career relationship and introduces members selectively to employers for specific roles.

A finance leader may register interest in both. Each has its own review, and acceptance into one does not imply acceptance into the other.

How the process works

Registration → initial review → assessment invitation → assessment → curator review → membership decision. Completing the assessment, including any payment associated with it, does not in itself confer membership. A directory listing and any active representation follow assessment, curator review and acceptance. Membership carries no promise of assignments, introductions, engagements or income.

The RutherfordINTEL Assessment informs our evaluation of functional potential, leadership style and suitability for external consulting relationships.

About the RutherfordINTEL Assessment. RutherfordINTEL reports that its assessment predicts performance potential with 85% predictive accuracy. That is a statement about the instrument, not a guarantee or a probability of success for any individual, role or mandate. Your results are always interpreted by a Rutherford curator alongside your experience, achievements and objectives.

Requirements

What we look for

Evidence before titles. During curation we will explore:

  • The financial leadership responsibility you have actually carried: the organisation, its ownership, the finance team and the decisions you were authorised to take.
  • Your work with owners, chief executives, boards or family shareholders, including a time you challenged an assumption and what followed.
  • Cash-flow forecasting, planning and management reporting that informed real decisions, and how you checked their reliability.
  • Financial controls and governance you designed or strengthened, in proportion to the size of the business.
  • Your relationships with lenders, investors and advisers, and any financing you led or supported.
  • Your contribution to a succession, management buyout, ownership transition or financing, where relevant.
  • What you were accountable for within the agreed mandate, what you achieved jointly with others, and what you influenced.
  • How you prioritise within limited time, and how you develop or work through an existing finance team.

Mandate fit

Be ready to describe the situations you have led, and those you are preparing to lead (growth, succession or ownership transition, a buyout, a financing, governance formalisation), and the arrangements you are open to: fractional, or the related advisory and consulting options.

How we consider your background

We look for credible evidence of executive-level financial leadership. How you gained it is flexible:

  • Your title. A chief financial officer title is welcome but not essential; we consider the responsibility you actually carried.
  • Your route into fractional work. Experienced finance leaders entering fractional work are welcome alongside established fractional CFOs.
  • Length of experience. No fixed minimum years-of-experience threshold applies to this Evergreen profile. The depth and relevance of your responsibility matter more.
  • Situational experience. Succession, buyout or venture-capital experience strengthens your fit where a client's situation calls for it.
  • Professional designations. These are recorded and considered alongside demonstrated capability; some client situations may call for one.
  • Personality. No particular personality type is expected; different finance leaders succeed with different owners and in different contexts. However, Personality Analytics 4.0™, the science behind the RutherfordINTEL Assessment, measures 85 personality factors, and high-potential CFOs share approximately 15 to 23 of the same factors. All members of the Rutherford Talent Clearinghouse™ are required to meet our benchmark for high-potential management consultants.

To register

Registration is short: your essential details, your function (F01 Fractional Executive, specialist profile Fractional CFO — Growth and Succession), your sector and your current résumé. A LinkedIn profile is optional, and you do not need a completed Rutherford Fractional Thesis™ or Rutherford Consultant Thesis™. Deeper questions about authority, examples, availability and references are gathered during subsequent curation, following initial review.
