Freelance Accountant

Interim Accountant (4 or 5 Days per Week) - 9 month assignment - Antwerp

Location: Antwerp, Belgium

Contract Type: Interim / Freelance (9-Month Assignment)

Start Date: Mid November

Working Pattern: 4 or 5 days per week (Flexibile)

Hybrid Policy: 3 days on-site, 2 days remote (with a stronger on-site presence during the onboarding period)

Languages: Dutch required, English professional level

The Opportunity

We are seeking a hands-on finance professional to provide broad coverage across the finance function and support day-to-day financial operations.

The successful candidate will be someone who enjoys being involved in operational finance activities, supporting colleagues, improving processes, and acting as a trusted point of contact across the business. The environment is modern, automated, and continuously focused on efficiency improvements, making it well suited to an accountant who is both technically capable and technology-savvy.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day financial operations
• Manage AP approval workflows
• Execute and oversee cash payment runs and bank releases
• Support month-end closing activities
• Prepare and review journal postings
• Review financial transactions and ensure accuracy
• Prepare and submit VAT returns
• Manage quarterly compliance reporting requirements
• Provide backup support for multilingual invoicing activities
• Support Accounts Receivable activities when required
• Coach and support junior team members
• Contribute to process improvements, automation initiatives, and system enhancements
• Assist with data uploads, workflow approvals, and finance system optimisation
• Partner with internal stakeholders to resolve operational finance matters
• Take ownership of tasks outside of the core role where required

Profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
• Approximately 4-5 years of relevant accounting or finance experience
• Strong understanding of General Ledger accounting
• Proven experience with VAT returns and compliance activities
• Solid exposure to Accounts Payable, payment runs, and financial operations
• Good understanding of Accounts Receivable processes
• Previous coaching or mentoring experience is advantageous
• Comfortable working autonomously and taking initiative
• Technology-savvy with an interest in automation and process improvement
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
• Fluent Dutch is essential
• Professional English language skills

Preferred Experience

• Experience working with Exact Online
• Experience in modern, highly automated finance environments
• Exposure to finance transformation, workflow optimisation, or process improvement projects
• Strong operational finance background with broad accounting exposure
