Front End Engineer

Dealroom is rebuilding its platform from the ground up, and we are looking for a Senior Frontend Engineer to help build it. This is not maintenance work on the old app — it is the new one. You will design and ship the surfaces our customers spend their working day in: the tables, maps, dashboards and profiles that venture capital firms, corporates and governments use to find the world's most promising companies. You will design the screens as well as build them. We have a design system and a token set, but no designer sitting between you and the interface. If you have spent years implementing other people's mockups and wanted the pen, this is that job. The frontend team is small and senior, so you would take real ownership of a significant part of the product early — not a backlog of tickets, but a part of the app that is yours to shape. You should know React and the web platform deeply, be able to take an idea from a rough description to something in production, and have opinions about interfaces that you can defend. You will join a small, senior frontend group inside a wider engineering team, working alongside an engineering lead. Small means real ownership from week one and no queue between you and a decision. The new platform is a fresh codebase, so the stack is current rather than inherited: Frontend: React 19, TypeScript (strict), TanStack Start for server-side rendering, TanStack Router, Query and Table, Tailwind CSS 4, Vite Our own design system , built in-house on Radix and Base UI, with around 70 components, developed in Storybook with interaction and accessibility tests running in a real browser Data-heavy UI: MapLibre GL for mapping, Recharts for charts, dnd-kit for drag-and-drop Backend: a TypeScript API on Deno and Hono, with Drizzle over AlloyDB — you will not work in it, but you will consume it, and its types are generated straight into the frontend Infrastructure: Kubernetes on Google Cloud, deployed through ArgoCD, with a preview environment spun up for every pull request Have a look at the current app at app.dealroom.co How we build. AI agents are a core part of how we build, not something we are trialling. That has changed what the job looks like. Less of it is typing out a component; more of it is deciding what should exist, specifying it precisely, and putting the guardrails in place that keep a fast-moving codebase correct. In practice that means: We encode conventions as checks that fail, not documents that get ignored. If a rule matters — performance budgets, API contracts, accessibility, architectural boundaries — something in the pipeline enforces it. Designing those guardrails is senior work here. We ship in small, reviewable increments , with continuous integration and a live preview environment for every pull request. Judgement is the scarce skill. Plenty of code gets generated; deciding whether it is right is the part we hire for. Automated reviewers comment on our pull requests too, and knowing when they are wrong is part of the job. None of this replaces engineering judgement — it raises the price of not having any. If you enjoy moving quickly inside a system that catches mistakes for you, you will like it here. To give you a sense of the actual work, here is what the team shipped recently: A landscape canvas where users arrange hundreds of companies into categories — drag and drop, marquee selection, right-click assignment, autosave, and a public shareable view An interactive startup map with a clustered dot layer, choropleth regions and progressive logo loading, over a corpus of millions of companies A filter builder spanning more than sixty filters, including one that turns a plain-English sentence into a structured query Tables that stay usable at scale: range selection, bulk actions on hundreds of rows, URL-driven state so any view can be shared as a link As a Senior Frontend Engineer you will: Design and build surfaces like those — deciding how they should look and behave, not just implementing them Own features end to end, from a written requirement or a rough mockup through to production Contribute to our design system, adding and improving components with stories, interaction tests and accessibility coverage Keep the app fast against real budgets. Our mapping library alone is a quarter of the JavaScript we ship, so weight is a live constraint and performance is treated as a feature, not cleanup Work with AI agents as a normal part of your workflow, and improve the guardrails the whole team relies on Give high-quality code review, to humans and to machines Help shape what gets built, not just how Requirements. Five things we actually need: Deep React and TypeScript , and real depth in the web platform underneath the framework Experience building interfaces that handle a lot of data — tables, filters, charts, or anything where state and performance get genuinely hard A good eye, and the confidence to use it. You will make interface decisions and defend them Judgement about AI tooling. You use it, and you can tell us where it helps and where it has let you down. We are less interested in enthusiasm than in discernment Clear written English. Much of how we decide things is written down You should also be based in, or willing to move to, the Amsterdam area — we work hybrid from the city centre. Everything else is learnable here, and none of it will keep you from applying. How we hire. We keep it short, and we know you probably have a job already. After an introductory conversation, you choose how we look at your work. Either a small exercise you can do entirely offline — our app runs with no backend, no VPN and no credentials, so you can build against it on a plane — or a walkthrough of something you have already built, or a couple of hours pairing with us on something real. All three end the same way: a conversation with the team about the decisions you made, including which parts you handed to an agent and where you overrode it.
