About Broadband Genie

Broadband Genie has been helping people compare and switch broadband since 2008. Our mission is to take the stress out of switching for the thousands of customers who use us every year.

We’re a team of 13 across product, acquisition and commercial, working cross-functionally so our focus stays on making the website better for customers. You’d join the product team, currently five people. We value open, transparent communication and real collaboration, and in a team this size the work you ship is visible and makes a difference.

The role

You’ll design and build the technology that moves our product forward and solves real business problems.

The role has a backend focus. Most of your time will go on the systems behind the site: our PHP/Symfony platform, the data and integrations that power our comparison results, our partner and affiliate connections, and the AWS infrastructure it all runs on.

Frontend skills are a real plus. You’ll pick up frontend work when the team needs it, and we’re moving our frontend toward Stimulus and React, so experience there is especially welcome.

It’s a small team, so you’ll have a direct impact on the product and the growth of the business. We’re looking for someone who enjoys working with pace, focus and flexibility.

What you’ll do

Own and develop our backend systems

  • Design, build and maintain backend features on our PHP/Symfony platform, including our in-house CMS and admin tools

  • Build and maintain integrations with third-party APIs and data feeds: broadband availability data, provider products and deals, affiliate networks (such as Awin and Impact) and ad platforms (such as Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising and Meta)

  • Develop and support our partner API, including the endpoints, reporting and data-passing our partners rely on

  • Keep the data behind our comparison results accurate and reliable, from availability lookups and product data to lead and sales imports

  • Design database schemas, write performant queries, manage migrations and support the data pipeline that feeds our reporting and analytics

  • Deploy, monitor and improve our services on AWS (ECS, RDS, Terraform, CI/CD), including scheduled jobs and alerting

  • Handle customer data securely and in line with UK GDPR, including encryption, data retention and access controls

Take ownership of quality

  • Own your work from build to deployment through our development pipeline

  • Test and troubleshoot thoroughly before changes go live, using automated tests, code review and feature flags to keep customer-facing errors to a minimum

  • Take responsibility for key technical KPIs such as site speed, security and uptime, and make sure our sites work on every device, browser and screen size

  • Investigate and resolve production incidents and data discrepancies, keeping the team clearly updated as you go

  • Review your teammates’ code, and have yours reviewed in turn

  • Document technical decisions and keep the team informed, so what we learn shapes future projects

  • Help scope, design and specify new projects and features, breaking larger pieces of work into deliverable milestones

Shape the product with the team

  • Own product development goals and sprint tasks, and help drive Broadband Genie forward in line with our business goals

  • Find and adopt new tools and practices, including AI-assisted development, that help the product succeed long term

  • Work closely with commercial and marketing colleagues on things like onboarding new providers and partners, and tracking and campaign changes

  • Pick up frontend work when needed, alongside our frontend developer

  • Join our weekly team check-ins, monthly product updates and monthly in-person meetups in Cambridge (attendance expected, travel costs covered)

What you’ll bring

Essential

  • 3+ years’ commercial experience as a backend or full stack developer

  • Significant experience on professional websites with complex data feeds and third-party integrations

  • Strong object-oriented PHP (8.x), with a solid grasp of the language beyond frameworks such as Symfony or Laravel

  • MySQL database design, query optimisation and administration

  • Designing, building and consuming REST APIs, including authentication and webhooks

  • Cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS, plus Docker, infrastructure as code (Terraform) and CI/CD

  • Git, including pull-request based code review

  • Automated testing (for example PHPUnit)

  • Secure coding practices and handling personal data in line with UK GDPR

Nice to have

  • Responsive, accessible HTML and CSS (Sass), built with a high degree of visual accuracy

  • Modern JavaScript, including Stimulus or React (the frameworks we’re moving toward), and build tooling such as Vite

  • Site performance and accessibility standards (Core Web Vitals, WCAG)

  • Data warehousing and reporting tools, especially dbt (plus Redshift and QuickSight)

  • Product analytics and conversion tracking (for example PostHog, Google Tag Manager and server-side conversion APIs)

  • Using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code or GitHub Copilot effectively and responsibly

  • Experience in comparison, affiliate or lead-generation businesses

Don’t tick every box? If you’re close and the role excites you, we’d still like to hear from you.

Our tech stack

  • Backend: PHP 8, Symfony, MySQL, REST APIs, PHPUnit

  • Infrastructure: AWS (ECS, RDS), Docker, Terraform, CI/CD, Cloudflare

  • Data and analytics: Redshift, dbt, QuickSight, PostHog

  • Frontend: HTML, Sass, JavaScript, Vite, moving toward Stimulus and React

  • Tools and workflow: Git, Shortcut, Slack, AI-assisted development

Our hiring process

  1. Intro call. A short video call about the role, the team and what you’re looking for.

  2. Exercise. A practical exercise based on the kind of work you’d do here. We’re flexible on timing, so fit it around your week.

  3. Technical review. We go through your exercise together: the decisions you made, the trade-offs and what you’d do next.

  4. Meet the team. Meet the people you’d work with day to day, and ask us anything.

If you need any adjustments at any stage, such as extra time on the exercise or a different interview format, just let us know.
