The Role and the Team

Engineering at Blue Light Card now works hand in hand with AI. Our replatforming gave us a modern foundation on AWS, and our engineers use tools such as Claude Code and Cursor to build, test, and ship faster. We're opening up multiple Full Stack Engineer roles in our growing Engineering team, building digital experiences that support millions of frontline workers across the UK.

TypeScript backends and AWS infrastructure sit at the heart of these roles, so a real understanding of how that infrastructure fits together matter as much as the code. The tools are only half of it: we want engineers who understand why they're reaching AI, can explain exactly what it has done, and stay accountable for what they ship.

You'll join a supportive agile squad, working closely with Product, Design, and Data on features that improve personalisation, engagement, and the overall member experience, with room to grow, experiment, and take ownership. You'll also have the chance to work on some exciting features as we continue to evolve and innovative Blue Light Card

What You’ll Do

  • Build and ship high-quality TypeScript backend services and APIs

  • Design, build, and maintain AWS serverless infrastructure using Infrastructure-as-Code

  • Develop features across our full-stack environment, including React and Next.js where the work calls for it

  • Use AI tools such as Claude Code and Cursor to speed up your work, choosing when they help and when they don't

  • Review and test AI-generated code with care, and explain clearly what it does and why you kept it

  • Take part in agile ceremonies and work closely with Product and Design to refine requirements and deliver predictably

  • Monitor production systems, resolve issues, and help us keep improving

  • Share what you learn about working with AI, and support others through learning sessions across our Engineering community

What You’ll Bring

  • Proven experience delivering production-ready full-stack applications, with depth in TypeScript backend and API patterns and working knowledge of React

  • A strong understanding of AWS infrastructure, with hands-on use of serverless and Infrastructure-as-Code tooling such as CDK, CloudFormation, or SST, and the confidence to design, deploy, and troubleshoot it

  • Experience across the full engineering lifecycle, from technical discovery and solution design through to testing, release, and operational support, weighing up trade-offs with little need for close direction

  • A strong record of maintaining high engineering standards, including clean architecture, automated testing, observability, and performance optimisation

  • Hands-on experience using AI coding tools such as Claude Code and Cursor in real delivery work, with the judgement to know when to trust their output and when to challenge it

  • The ability to explain exactly what was built, what AI contributed, and why each decision was made, so others can review and learn from your work

  • Experience working in cross-functional teams, representing engineering considerations clearly to Product, Design, and stakeholders, and sharing knowledge through pairing, mentoring, or leading discussion
