TrustVet is a high-growth veterinary technology company transforming how veterinary practices manage pet health. We enable clinics to automate pet health plans, manage subscription billing and controlled prescription delivery through our proprietary platform.
Our technology bridges the gap between veterinary clinics and pet owners, empowering practices to improve operational efficiency, create and automate sustainable recurring revenue streams and to strengthen client engagement while preserving the veterinary clinical authority. With a rapidly growing customer footprint, proven product-market fit, and significant scaling milestones ahead, we are expanding our core product engineering team.
As part of our engineering team, you'll play a key role in designing, building, and scaling the software that powers thousands of interactions between veterinary professionals and pet owners. This is an opportunity to make a real impact within a high-growth SaaS business, working on meaningful technical challenges as we continue to expand our platform and it’s capabilities.
We are seeking an ambitious, detail-oriented Full Stack Laravel Developer to join our small engineering team, working closely with the CTO. This is a roll-up-your-sleeves startup role where you'll have a high degree of autonomy and see your work go live quickly, with support when you need it.
Because our core platform handles credit card and direct-debit subscriptions, recurring automated billing, and medication fulfilment, quality is a top priority. We value clean, well-tested code, and on the critical paths we never cut corners.
We actively use AI coding tools, including Claude Code, to accelerate development, explore edge cases and improve test coverage. We're looking for developers who are enthusiastic about using these tools effectively, while applying their own judgement and taking full responsibility for the code they ship.
Our stack is Laravel 13, Livewire, Alpine.js, Tailwind CSS and MySQL, with PHPUnit for testing, Git for version control, and AWS and Google Cloud for hosting. We organise our code using domain-driven design (DDD) and make heavy use of job queues and background processing.
- Build and ship new features across our platform, from database design through to the user interface.
- Turn designs into clean, responsive and accessible interfaces with Tailwind CSS, Livewire and Alpine.js, built for busy clinic staff and pet owners.
- Write efficient MySQL queries, and find and fix slow queries and pages to keep the platform fast as we grow.
- Build and maintain subscription billing and recurring payments across a wide range of payment gateways, handling webhooks, failed payments and edge cases carefully so transaction data stays accurate.
- Build custom reports and data exports for veterinary practices and our internal teams.
- Build and improve the internal admin tools our customer service and operations teams use every day.
- Refactor and modernise older parts of the codebase so it stays reliable and easy to work with.
- Write clean, readable code and automated tests that protect our critical business logic.
- Keep Laravel and our packages up to date, including upgrades to new Laravel versions.
- Follow PSR standards and SOLID principles, and keep new code consistent with our domain-driven structure.
- Tackle technical debt as you go, leaving code better than you found it.
- Write clear documentation for the team.
- Take part in code reviews, giving constructive feedback and taking it on board for your own work.
- Test features hands-on from start to finish before release, alongside automated tests.
- Work with external partners, such as practice management system providers and fulfilment partners, to plan, build and maintain integrations.
- Build and maintain our REST APIs.
- Keep data in sync between TrustVet and practice management systems, so clinics always see up-to-date plans, payments and prescriptions.
- Handle incoming and outgoing webhooks reliably, including retries, failures and logging.
- Investigate integration issues with partners, working through API payloads and logs to find and fix the cause.
- Help new customers move to TrustVet from other providers.
- Validate, cleanse and import customer data, such as client, pet and payment records, ensuring an accurate and seamless transition.
- Work directly with customers, third parties and our customer service team during the move to answer data questions and check everything has come across correctly.
- Act as second-line support for our customer service team, investigating technical issues they can't resolve.
- Diagnose and fix bugs reported by customer service or picked up by our error-reporting tools.
- Experience: 3+ years of hands-on professional experience building and maintaining production applications with Laravel and PHP.
- Laravel Ecosystem: Strong working knowledge of Eloquent, Livewire, database migrations, queues/jobs, events, policies, and the service container.
- Database & Data Modelling: Strong proficiency in MySQL, including transaction locking, indexing strategies, foreign keys, and query optimisation.
- Modern Frontend: Proficient in semantic HTML5, Tailwind CSS, and modern JavaScript, with hands-on experience building interactive UIs with Livewire and Alpine.js.
- Automated Testing: A strong habit of writing automated tests with PHPUnit, especially for core business and payment logic.
- Security Discipline: Solid understanding of web application security (CSRF/XSS prevention, multi-tenant platform security, Laravel policies and guards, secure credential storage, GDPR compliance awareness).
- API Development: Hands-on experience developing and consuming RESTful JSON APIs, handling webhooks, authenticating via OAuth2/tokens, and debugging payloads.
- Payments: Experience integrating payment gateways, subscription billing or other financial workflows where accuracy and idempotency really matter.
- Data Import & Migration: Experience importing and cleaning data from CSV and Excel files, including validation, transformation and handling errors in messy data.
- Version Control: Fluent with Git branching workflows and comfortable with CI/CD deployment pipelines.
- AI-Assisted Development: Comfortable using AI coding tools as part of a modern development workflow, with the ability to critically evaluate, test and improve generated code.
- Experience configuring and managing services on AWS or Google Cloud, such as storage, databases, queues and serverless functions, while keeping environments secure and cost-efficient.
- Experience integrating with veterinary practice management systems (PMS), or a good understanding of how veterinary practices work, including their day-to-day workflows and terminology.
- Direct Business Impact: Your work powers thousands of payments and medication deliveries every week, and you'll see its impact straight away.
- Modern Working Environment: A modern setup with the tools you need to do your best work, including quality hardware, software and AI coding tools.
- Growth & Ownership: A flat structure with no corporate bureaucracy, where you can take real ownership of your work and grow with the company.
- Remote-First: Work remotely, with occasional days together at our Maynooth office.
- Salary: competitive salary commensurate with your experience
- Annual Leave: 20 days per annum
- Pension: 2.5% matched contribution
Our process focuses on real-world problems rather than whiteboard puzzles:
- Initial Screening (30 mins): A short chat about your background, how you like to work and what you're looking for.
- Technical Deep Dive (45 mins): We'll work through a realistic engineering scenario involving some of the challenges we face at TrustVet. We'll discuss your approach, implementation choices, testing strategy and how you'd handle potential edge cases. This is a collaborative technical discussion, not a timed coding test or whiteboard puzzle. We'll also look at some of your past work, such as production apps or code you can share.
- Final Interview (30 mins): A conversation with members of our non-technical team about how you work and collaborate.
- Reference Checks & Offer: We'll contact your references before making a formal offer.
