About Endless Access
Our vision is simple: the whole world, empowered.
Endless Access works to close the global digital divide by helping young people in underserved communities become creators of technology, not only consumers of it. Our learning programs teach a new generation to design and build their own games and digital projects using free, open-source tools, delivered through mentors, instructors, and partners around the world.
These learning programs center around our flagship game, Threadbare. Students develop their skills and ambitions as they transition from playing the game to helping build it. Threadbare is developed in the open, by our Games team and a growing community of contributors. As our programs reach more learners in more regions, we are growing the team that keeps the game stable, fun, and welcoming to the people learning to build it.
About the Role
Endless Access is seeking a mid-level Game Engineer, based in Latin America, to join our Games team and help build Threadbare, an open-source, community-built narrative adventure game made with the Godot engine. This is a hands-on engineering role. You will ship features, fix issues, and help keep the game stable, performant, and fun to play.
You will work closely with our senior game engineer as well as our creative director, producer, and contributor community. Most of your time will go to game development on the Threadbare roadmap. A smaller part of the role connects you with our learning programs, where you will guide learners who are building the game alongside us.
This is a 5–6 month contract, and we are hiring with the clear intent of finding someone we would want on the team long term.
If you enjoy working in an existing codebase, care about how changes feel to players, and like helping newer developers grow, this role is for you.
Key Responsibilities
Game Development (60%)
- Build and ship gameplay features, UI, and systems, from design spec to release.
- Fix bugs and improve performance, stability, and load times.
- Work with design and art to turn ideas into playable builds, and give feedback on feasibility and scope.
- Write clean, tested, maintainable code, and take part in code reviews with the team.
- Estimate your work, flag risks early, and keep the team informed through planning and regular updates.
- Contribute to the tools, pipelines, and documentation that make the team faster.
Learning and Community (40%)
- Review code from learners in our game development programs and give clear, encouraging written feedback.
- Collaborate with our Learning Experience team on tooling that supports our game development curriculum, as the roadmap allows.
- Join occasional community events, such as game jams and livestreams.
Skills and Experience
Essential
- 4+ years of professional software engineering, including hands-on work on shipped or live games.
- Experience shipping or maintaining a released game or live product as part of a team, working alongside other engineers, designers, and artists.
- Comfortable with Git-based workflows, code review, and working in an existing codebase.
- Willingness to mentor early-career game developers by reviewing their code and giving written feedback.
- Clear written and verbal communication, especially in a remote, asynchronous team.
- Familiarity with open-source communities and contribution practices.
- Able to work independently and to ask for help at the right time.
- Professional or fluent English.
Desirable
- Experience with the Godot engine (GDScript)
- Accessibility or inclusive design experience in games.
- Experience with learning or educational games.
- Familiarity with analytics, live ops, or build and CI pipelines.
- Spanish ability.
- An interest in our mission to expand access to technology.
How We Work
Endless Access is a fully distributed, global nonprofit. Most of the team works remotely and asynchronously across many countries, and this role is no exception: it is fully remote and based in Latin America, collaborating daily with teammates and contributors across multiple time zones, much of it in writing, in code review, and over video. We are looking for someone who thrives in a self-directed, cross-cultural environment, and who communicates clearly and openly in writing.
Not Sure You Meet 100% of the Requirements?
Studies show that women and people from underrepresented backgrounds often hesitate to apply unless they meet every listed qualification. Building a truly inclusive digital future means bringing together diverse perspectives and experiences; if you are excited about this role and our mission to expand access to technology, we strongly encourage you to apply even if you do not check every box. Your perspective could be exactly what we need.
Endless is an Equal Opportunity Employer
We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. We encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds who share our passion for games, education, and creating opportunities for underserved learners. Endless provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local laws.
