Job Summary
The Genetic Counselor provides genetic education, counseling, and support to patients, families, and research participants who may have or be at risk for genetic conditions or variations. This role works collaboratively with patients and multidisciplinary care teams to help individuals understand genetic information, explore testing options, and make informed decisions about their care.Does this position require Patient Care?

Essential Functions
-Provide genetic counseling, education, and support in alignment with the needs of the department or program and within the scope of genetic counseling practice.
-Review personal and family medical histories, assess genetic risk, and support patients in understanding their individualized risk and available options.
-Coordinate genetic testing processes, including test selection, informed consent, result disclosure, and appropriate follow-up.
-Document patient encounters and genetic counseling activities accurately and in accordance with clinical and professional standards.
-Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support coordinated, patient-centered care.
-Maintain professional certification and licensure and practice in accordance with applicable ethical, clinical, and professional standards.
-Participate in educational opportunities, clinical training, and professional development activities to expand knowledge and skills.
-Support the education and supervision of genetic counseling trainees, as appropriate based on clinical experience.
-Contribute to departmental quality improvement and process improvement initiatives by sharing feedback and identifying opportunities to enhance patient care and workflows.
-Support initiatives that promote patient access, education, and advocacy within the program.
Qualifications
Education
- Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling required, or Master's Degree in a related field of study required.
- Experience in lieu of a degree is not accepted for this position.
Licenses and Credentials
- Provisional Genetic Counselor license in Massachusetts required through the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Genetic Counselors.
Experience
- 0–1 year of genetic counseling experience preferred.
- New graduates and early-career genetic counselors are encouraged to apply.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong communication skills, including active listening and empathetic communication.
- Compassion and sensitivity when supporting patients and families navigating genetic conditions and related information.
- Ability to build rapport and establish trust with patients, families, and individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Foundational knowledge of genetics, genetic conditions, and inheritance patterns.
- Familiarity with electronic health records and genetic databases.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail when managing patient documentation, testing workflows, and scheduling.
- Openness to learning, seeking guidance, and developing clinical skills under the supervision of licensed genetic counselors.
