Illumina is seeking a Sr. Staff Medical Science Liaison (MSL) with deep expertise in genomics, genetic disease, and reproductive health. Illumina is a global leader in DNA sequencing and multi-omics, with a global presence in research and clinical markets. Illumina manufactures research use only (RUO) and in vitro diagnostic (IVD) products that support both research and clinical environments.
The Sr. Staff MSL is responsible for facilitating objective, evidence-based, and non-promotional scientific exchange regarding Illumina's technologies, products, and associated scientific data. This role focuses on building and maintaining relationships with key opinion leaders (KOL) and other scientific stakeholders, gathering insights to inform Medical Affairs strategy, supporting research and educational initiatives, and responding to unsolicited requests for scientific information in accordance with company policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
The individual will contribute scientific expertise related to genomic technologies, emerging evidence, laboratory applications, and evolving scientific, laboratory, and clinical evidence relevant to advancing research in the field of genetic disease and reproductive health. As a member of the US Medical Affairs organization, this individual will serve as a field-based scientific resource and scientific exchange partner to healthcare professionals (HCP), laboratory personnel, researchers, academic institutions, and other stakeholders. Through engagement with external experts and the broader scientific community, the Sr. Staff MSL will help advance understanding of genomics and precision medicine.
This position is part of Illumina’s US Medical Affairs organization and reports to a Head of Reproductive and Genomic Health for the USCAN region. It is an opportunity to contribute to the advancement of genomic research through scientific engagement and support of Illumina’s research and clinical sequencing solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a field-based scientific resource and trusted scientific exchange partner for KOLs, HCPs, laboratory personnel, researchers, academic institutions, and other stakeholders in genomics, genetic disease, and reproductive health. Conduct all interactions in a factual, objective, non-promotional manner and in accordance with applicable company policies and practices.
- Develop and maintain deep scientific expertise in genomic technologies, translational research, and emerging scientific evidence, and molecular diagnostics relevant to genetic disease and reproductive health. Monitor key publications, scientific trends, and evolving standards that may impact the genomics landscape.
- Foster and maintain collaborative relationships with external scientific leaders and stakeholders to facilitate scientific exchange, gather insights, and understand evolving scientific, clinical, and research needs within the genomics community. Identification and engagement of KOLs will be based on scientific expertise and contributions to the field.
- Deliver objective, balanced, and evidence-based scientific education regarding genomics, precision medicine, and emerging research using approved scientific content and materials.
- Collect, analyze, and communicate scientific insights from external stakeholders to inform Medical Affairs strategy, evidence generation activities, educational initiatives, and future research priorities.
- Support scientific exchange activities at scientific congresses, advisory boards, investigator meetings, and other research-focused forums.
- Respond to unsolicited requests for scientific information regarding Illumina products and technologies to ensure responses are accurate, balanced, evidence-based, and appropriately documented.
- Facilitate dissemination of approved scientific information, including scientific publications, congress presentations, clinical practice resources, and other scientific materials in accordance with applicable company policies.
- Provide scientific support for investigator-sponsored research, collaborative research opportunities, and Illumina-sponsored clinical or research studies, including identification of qualified investigators, scientific discussions regarding study concepts, and support of study-related scientific communications.
- Where requested, partner cross-functionally with Research & Development, Product Management, Regulatory Affairs, Market Access, Legal, Compliance, and Commercial teams as appropriate.
- Contribute scientific expertise to publication planning, scientific communications, evidence dissemination, and review of scientific content intended for external audiences.
- Maintain Medical Affair independence and compliance thorough understanding of applicable regulations, industry guidance, company policies, and ethical standards governing scientific exchange, medical affairs activities, and communications related to both IVD and RUO products.
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree required (i.e. MS/certified genetic counselor, PhD) in a relevant scientific discipline. Clinical laboratory experience strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of and experience in interacting with compliance, legal, product management, commercial teams, and other functions of relevance in the medical device industry.
- Understanding of genomics, personalized medicine, in vitro diagnostics, clinical laboratory workflows and genetics background with a research and publication record preferred.
- Greater than or equal to 5 years of clinical, scientific/research, or industry related experience or equivalent required.
- Able to readily interpret scientific data, to understand the potential impact of data on clinical practices and research needs, and to communicate scientific data to broad audiences.
- Must possess a thorough understanding of FDA, CLIA, HIPAA and laws and regulations relevant to the medical device industry.
- Possesses advanced problem solving and analytic skills to be able to identify, and translate specific territory and corporate needs, into an action that will achieve objectives.
- At least 3 years of MSL experience or equivalent in genomics.
- More than 5 years preferred.
- Must be willing to travel 50% of the time.

The estimated base salary range for the Sr. Staff Medical Science Liaison in Genetic Disease Testing and Reproductive Health, US role based in the United States of America is: $155,600 - $233,400. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. The range reflects long‑term growth in the role; therefore, most candidates are hired between the minimum and middle of the range. Placement depends on experience, skills, location, and internal equity. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
