Geotechnical Engineer

Supporting Scotland's Infrastructure and Energy Future

As investment in Scotland's infrastructure and energy networks continues to grow, we're expanding our Geotechnical Engineering team in Glasgow to support a strong pipeline of projects across the renewable energy, transportation, water, flood protection, and power sectors.

At Tetra Tech, you'll have the opportunity to work on high-profile schemes that help shape Scotland's future, including renewable energy developments, transmission infrastructure, transport projects, flood alleviation works, and major civil engineering programmes. Our Geotechnical Engineering team provides specialist expertise throughout the project lifecycle, from feasibility studies and ground investigations through to detailed design and construction support.

Following continued growth across our Scottish and Northern Ireland businesses, we are looking for a Geotechnical Engineer to join our Glasgow office.

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and collaborative engineer to work on a diverse range of projects while developing technical expertise, building client relationships, and contributing to the delivery of sustainable infrastructure solutions that support communities and the UK's net-zero ambitions.

Purpose & Scope of the Role

As a Geotechnical Engineer, you will support the delivery of geotechnical engineering projects across a range of sectors, including renewables, energy transmission, transportation, water, and flood protection.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will be involved in all stages of project delivery, including site feasibility assessments, planning and supervising ground investigations, geotechnical interpretation, design development, reporting, and construction supervision. You will be responsible for delivering high-quality technical outputs while ensuring projects are completed in line with programme, budget, quality, and safety requirements.

You will prepare a variety of technical documents including Desk Studies, Ground Investigation Reports, Geotechnical Interpretative Reports, Geotechnical Design Reports, specifications, and construction drawings. You will also undertake site visits and inspections, providing technical support throughout the construction phase and ensuring works are delivered in accordance with project requirements.

The role offers the opportunity to work independently while also contributing to wider project teams, collaborating with colleagues across multiple disciplines to develop practical and innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges.

Your Impact in this Position

You will play an important role in delivering the geotechnical solutions that underpin major infrastructure and renewable energy projects across Scotland and the wider UK.

Success in this role will be measured through your ability to deliver technically robust solutions, support project teams, maintain strong client relationships, and contribute positively to project outcomes. In the short term, you will develop your understanding of our projects, clients, and working practices while providing technical support on active schemes. Over time, you will take increasing responsibility for project delivery, client engagement, and contributing to the continued growth of our geotechnical capability.

Through your work, you will help ensure the safe, sustainable, and efficient delivery of infrastructure that supports communities, protects the environment, and enables the transition to a low-carbon future.

Your Toolkit for Success at Tetra Tech

At Tetra Tech, we recruit using core capabilities, the essential skills, experience, and responsibilities required to perform the role effectively. But here's the secret: there's no such thing as the perfect candidate. If you feel you meet around 75% of the requirements, we'd love to hear from you.

Technical Expertise in Geotechnical Engineering

You will possess a strong understanding of geotechnical engineering principles and their practical application across infrastructure projects. This will include experience in site assessments, planning and supervising ground investigations, interpreting geotechnical data, undertaking design calculations, and preparing technical reports in accordance with relevant industry standards and guidance.

Experience contributing to projects within sectors such as renewable energy, transportation, water, flood protection, or power infrastructure will be advantageous. You will be confident in producing clear and accurate technical documentation and supporting the development of practical and buildable engineering solutions.

Your technical knowledge will enable you to assess ground conditions, identify geotechnical risks, and contribute effectively to design decisions throughout the project lifecycle.

Project Delivery & Collaboration

As a Geotechnical Engineer, you will take ownership of your allocated tasks and workstreams, ensuring that deliverables are completed to a high standard and within agreed programme and budget constraints.

You will work closely with engineers, environmental specialists, planners, and project managers across multidisciplinary teams, contributing technical expertise and supporting successful project delivery. A proactive and collaborative approach will allow you to build effective working relationships with colleagues and clients while contributing positively to project outcomes.

Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for this role. You will actively participate in project meetings, technical discussions, and client engagements, confidently explaining engineering decisions and discussing alternative approaches where appropriate.

You will be responsible for producing clear, concise, and technically accurate reports, specifications, and written communications that support project delivery and client decision-making. Your ability to communicate complex technical concepts in a straightforward manner will help build trust and credibility with clients and stakeholders.

Analytical Thinking & Problem Solving

You will bring a logical and analytical approach to problem solving, with the ability to assess complex ground conditions and develop practical geotechnical solutions.

Working alongside colleagues from a range of technical disciplines, you will contribute to resolving engineering challenges through sound technical judgement, innovation, and attention to detail. Your ability to evaluate risks and identify opportunities will support the successful delivery of projects across a diverse portfolio.

Safety, Quality & Professional Development

You will play an active role in promoting high standards of health, safety, quality, and environmental performance across all aspects of your work.

Committed to continuous professional development, you will seek opportunities to expand your technical knowledge and progress towards professional accreditation. Through ongoing learning and experience, you will continue to develop the skills required to deliver increasingly complex and challenging projects.

Mandatory Requirements

You will hold a BEng or MEng degree in Civil Engineering and possess a sound understanding of geotechnical engineering principles and practice.

Experience or knowledge in areas such as site assessment, planning and supervision of ground investigations, geotechnical interpretation, reporting, specifications, and geotechnical design is essential. You should be able to work both independently and collaboratively while effectively managing your workload to meet project deadlines.

Strong written and verbal communication skills are required, along with excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Due to the nature of the role, you must hold a full UK driving licence and be willing to travel throughout the UK and Ireland as required.

Desirable

Graduate Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and progress towards Chartered Engineer status would be highly desirable.

Experience working within renewable energy, transmission, transportation, water, flood protection, or other civil infrastructure sectors would be beneficial, as would experience working within multidisciplinary project environments.

Knowledge of relevant geotechnical standards, construction supervision, and geotechnical design software will further strengthen your application.

Work Patterns and Locations The role is based in Glasgow with an expectation of at least two days per week on site for collaboration and client engagement. Hybrid working is available, with flexibility provided in line with project and client requirements.
