About the Role
This is a significant strategic leadership opportunity at the heart of Council's governance and decision-making framework.
As Governance and Councillor Advisory Lead, you'll provide trusted advice to Councillors, the Executive Leadership Team and senior leaders, helping navigate complex governance matters, legislative obligations and organisational decisions. You'll lead a highly capable team responsible for governance and Councillor support services while driving continuous improvement across the function.
Operating in a dynamic local government environment, you'll bring a steady and considered approach to managing competing priorities, sensitive issues and time-critical work. You'll enjoy bringing structure to complexity, supporting sound decision-making and creating the conditions for your team to perform at their best.
This role will suit an experienced local government leader who enjoys building relationships, influencing outcomes and leading through complexity with confidence, professionalism and care for people.
What You’ll deliver
- Strategic governance advice to Councillors, Executive Leadership Team and senior leaders on complex governance matters.
- High-quality Council Meetings, Committee Meetings and Councillor Briefings that meet legislative and governance requirements.
- Governance reform, service improvement and governance maturity initiatives that strengthen organisational capability.
- Leadership of governance, integrity, compliance and Councillor support functions that foster accountability and transparency.
- A high-performing, collaborative team culture focused on service excellence and continuous improvement.

- Extensive local government experience and a demonstrated track record working closely with Councillors and elected representatives.
- The ability to build trusted relationships and provide confidential advice in politically sensitive and complex environments.
- Strong judgement and the ability to balance legislative obligations, organisational priorities and stakeholder expectations.
- A calm, resilient and emotionally intelligent leadership style that helps others stay focused and effective when priorities are changing or demand is high.
- The ability to bring clarity to complex issues, make informed decisions and create confidence in those around you.
- Degree qualification in Governance, Law, Public Administration, Business, Political Science or a related discipline.
- Willingness to undergo pre-employment background checks including National Criminal History Check, Working with Children Check & Eligibility to Work check.
