Job Description:
Early Careers at bp
Looking to turn your career dreams into global impact? Explore graduate opportunities with bp. Here you get to work on challenging projects, learn from experts and mentors, and be part of a high-performing team from the get-go. You get the freedom to think boldly, the license to innovate and the chance to grow in multiple directions. And you get supported, recognized and rewarded along the way.
Our Subsurface Graduate Programme
One Subsurface is our early careers programme designed to create a pipeline of diverse subsurface professionals. The program is for 3 years, with most early careers completing two 18-month rotations, designed to provide breadth of experience and build technical depth.
Early careers will follow a structured development offer to accelerate the acquisition of foundational technical skills, experience and knowledge, and application in the business world. The programme supports transition from university to discipline professional and, through our 'Elevate' training programme, provides a framework of ‘non-technical’ skills to support building personal effectiveness, helping you to grow both personally and professionally.
Early careers will build their experience through challenging development assignments, grow a toolkit of transferable skills for the future, and have a dedicated network of support, as well as a vibrant Early Careers community, to help them succeed.
Role and Responsibilities
Job description for Geophysics Graduate role
The Graduate Geophysicist learns and operates, with support from senior team members, in seismic interpretation, analysis and the integration of geophysical data with other disciplines, supporting well concept and early well design squads. The role supports the Integrated Subsurface Description (ISD), special studies and New Well Delivery activities in line with the common process. The Geophysicist interfaces with drilling and completions teams to prepare well documents for the D1, D2, D3 (Well Concept Selection), D5 (Statement of Requirements document) and D11 (subsurface end-of-well report) stages, provides geophysical operational support as needed, and may represent bp externally or in partner meetings.
The accountabilities below are generic and will be refined according to the Graduate Geophysicist's assignment:
- Deliver high-quality geophysical inputs as an individual technical contributor, working closely with other subsurface disciplines to progress prioritized business opportunities.
- Put safety first by applying HSE and safe-operations practices in all activities, including field visits and operational support.
- Develop competency in seismic data quality assessment, seismic resolution assessment, processing concepts, well ties, velocity analysis, and depth conversion and uncertainty, including the strengths, limitations and fitness for use of datasets before interpretation and integration, and learn to document seismic data limitations and contribute to the seismic health check ahead of the seismic fitness review.
- Interpret and integrate seismic, well-log, analogue and dynamic data (e.g., pressure, production) with other disciplines to build and refine the structural, stratigraphic, depositional, rock property and fluid frameworks, maintaining a consistent Integrated Subsurface Description that informs key documents, with an emphasis on learning how to deliver these products.
- Contribute, as part of an integrated team, to the geophysical inputs, documents and reviews required for well planning and delivery (D1, D2, D3, D5 and D11), including real-time activity within New Well Delivery, and support post-well evaluation by capturing lessons learned from well results and feeding them back into future well plans and the D11 report, with an emphasis on learning the relevant practices.
- Learn to provide up-to-date geophysical information for maps and other internal documents in line with defined practices, engaging the Discipline Advisor and other field geophysicists for assurance as needed.
- Learn to identify strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities when analyzing data, and work with senior geophysicists to identify studies, projects and programs that improve understanding of the data.
- Work with geophysicists in ADU (Area Development Unit) teams to deliver and analyze products for reservoir characterization.
- Learn and apply best-practice workflows, and continually seek improved ways of generating and interpreting seismic products, in collaboration with Global Subsurface Solutions (GSS) teams, including GSS Seismic Delivery, and other technical experts.
- Build organizational capability by participating actively in community sessions, acting as a local representative for a community of practice where appropriate, and sharing knowledge through coaching of summer interns.
- Keep stakeholders and other disciplines informed of changes in geophysical understanding and of new geophysical products, and share geophysical understanding of the field with SOCAR, partners and others as needed (e.g., inputs to partner engagement meetings).
- Meet the graduate programme requirements, including rotations across at least two roles and a minimum of 15 field days for graduation, tracking progress in the OneSubsurface tracker, and work constructively with the Discipline Advisor and others to build and implement a personal development plan.
