The Graphic Designer is a skilled visual communicator responsible for bringing GMHC’s mission to life across print and digital channels. As GMHC expands its service model to include primary care, dental care, mental health services, and comprehensive programming for LGBTQ+ communities, long-term survivors, women, trans youth, and other communities affected by HIV and health inequities, the Graphic Designer helps shape how those stories, programs, and priorities are expressed visually — across campaigns, events, digital platforms, and a dynamic rebrand rollout.
Reporting to the Managing Director, Creative Strategy, the Graphic Designer produces high-quality creative work across a wide range of formats and channels, including social media graphics, email campaigns, event collateral, reports, and web assets. This is an opportunity to do meaningful, high-impact design work in a collaborative environment — contributing to a rebrand rollout while also supporting the day-to-day creative needs of a dynamic organization. This is a role for a skilled visual communicator who is energized by purpose-driven work and ready to grow. The Graphic Designer works collaboratively across the Communications & Branding team and with internal stakeholders to translate strategic goals and written content into clear, compelling visual communication.
Above all, this role requires someone who cares. GMHC's work is urgent, personal, and life-changing for the communities we serve. The right candidate will bring not just design expertise but a genuine passion for the mission and a deep commitment to the people at the center of it.
- Design print and digital materials across a wide range of formats, including social media graphics, email campaigns, reports, event collateral, signage, and web assets
- Uphold and evolve brand standards during an active rebrand, ensuring consistency across all touchpoints and channels
- Retouch, color-correct, and prepare photos and images for use across communications materials
- Create and maintain organized, accessible design files and asset libraries for team use
- Collaborate with the Brand & Communications team to concept, develop, and deliver creative work on deadline
- Translate written content and strategic goals into clear, compelling visual communication
- Support light project management tasks, including tracking timelines, flagging bottlenecks, and communicating proactively on deliverables
- Apply basic motion design skills to create simple animated content for social media and digital platforms
- Prepare production-ready files and manage relationships with print vendors
- Support web content updates using CMS tools in collaboration with digital staff
- File and asset management — keeping organized within shared file systems
- Partner with internal stakeholders across departments to scope and fulfill design requests
Additional Requirements
- 3–5 years of graphic design experience in a professional setting
- Digital portfolio of relevant client-initiated graphic design work
Special Skills and Knowledge
- Confidence and a perspective on what makes graphic design effective.
- Demonstrated mastery of typography and visual hierarchy across both print and digital formats
- Interest in working within a brand system; keeping assets cohesive, while never feeling stale
- Solid photo editing skills, including retouching, color correction, and image sourcing/selection
- Fluency in screen-based design — including web layouts, social media graphics, and digital campaigns
- Basic motion design skills (or genuine eagerness to learn and grow in this area)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to present and articulate creative decisions clearly
Other Skills
- Commitment to inclusive, stigma-free, and people-first communication
- Deep awareness of and alignment with LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities
- Authentic passion for GMHC's mission and the communities we serve.
Education and Certification
- Bachelor's degree in graphic design preferred, or equivalent professional experience.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop required)
- Familiarity with or curiosity about Figma, Canva, Adobe AfterEffects, and emerging design tools
Work Environment and Schedule
- Hybrid role requiring residence within New York City or the surrounding tri-state area
- Attend on-site team working sessions at our New York City office 1–3 days per week (at first; subject to review in the future)
- Flexibility to work non-traditional hours during campaigns or events.
- Participation in AIDS Walk NY is mandatory for all staff.
Physical Demands
- While carrying out the responsibilities of this role:
- Prolonged sitting and use of computer equipment.
- Regular communication with colleagues, stakeholders, and external partners.
