About Mimo

MimoLabs builds Mimo, an agentic system for making physical things. Describe anything and Mimo helps you make it: he designs the geometry, simulates that it can be made, configures material, process and price, and routes it to production, across 3D printing, CNC, laser cutting and more. Mimo ships today as Mimo Studio for anyone regardless of skill, and we are building developer tools and enterprise solutions for more technical applications.

We are a VC funded, experienced technical team, based at Newlab in Detroit and remote across the US.

About the role

You will design and build real hardware with Mimo every day at Newlab in Detroit, and every build becomes product feedback, an example project and content. You are the engineer who uses the agent the way our customers will, on real products with real constraints, and who tells the engineers what broke and the marketing team what worked. You will also help other teams at Newlab make things with Mimo.

What you will do

  • Design, print, machine, wire and assemble working products with Mimo, the Newlab shop and our own equipment, for example an enclosure with a board inside it, from the first prompt to a product that powers up.

  • Keep the build log: every build written up in a standard format with photos and files, for example the print settings, the toolpaths and what changed between the first and the final part.

  • File product feedback through our process: bug reports with a repro, and usability findings with the moment they happened.

  • Make the examples and content: showcase parts, example projects and demo material for the product and for marketing.

  • Help other teams at Newlab make things with Mimo, hands on.

You may be a good fit if you have

  • 5+ years in mechanical engineering or product design, with hardware products you shipped.

  • 3D printing, CNC machining and electronics, hands-on with all three: FDM and resin printing; setting up and running a mill or router from your own toolpaths; boards, sensors, power and wiring.

  • The ability to design and build a complete hardware product on your own.

  • CAD in at least one major system, and design for manufacturing.

  • Clear writing, and comfort presenting on camera.

  • AI tools in your workflow, and a critical eye on what they produce.

  • A Detroit base, on-site at Newlab.

Nice to have

  • Published builds, technical writing or video.

  • Teaching or workshop experience.

  • Simulation or physical testing (FEA, drop and load tests).

  • Python or code-first CAD.

  • Injection molding, sheet metal, powder-bed printing or PCB design.

  • Microcontroller firmware.

How we work

Everyone here runs several AI agents on our own tooling, and the shop is no exception: you are free to build your own tooling and change how we build, test and show what Mimo makes. We judge the work by the physical thing it produces: a part that prints, a board that powers up, a product that works. We are fast and adaptable, honest with each other about what is working, and we celebrate the wins. We are a small team that loves what it is building. Builds, write-ups and bug reports follow the same process the engineers use.

Pay, equity and benefits

  • $100K–$200K base and equity, four-year vesting with a one-year cliff.

  • Health, dental and vision.

Logistics

  • Location: on-site at Newlab in Detroit. The founders work from Newlab part of each week, and the rest of the team is remote across the US.

  • Work authorization: US work authorization is required, and we are not able to sponsor visas for this role.

  • Education: no degree requirement.

  • AI: we use AI tools to organize and summarize applications; a person reads every application and makes every decision. Use AI to prepare yours if you like; the short answers in the form should be your own.

  • Process: a call with a founder, a build conversation on a real product from your portfolio, a day at Newlab with the team, references, offer.

  • Safety: we only write from mimolabs.ai addresses and never ask for money, fees or banking details before your first day.
