Job Summary

The Head of Business Performance is a cross-functional leadership role connecting Operations & Transformation, Finance and Commercial. The role turns operational and commercial opportunities into measurable financial outcomes, bringing together workforce productivity, delivery model design, cost and revenue optimisation, pricing and proposition development, and disciplined benefit realisation.

This role will work across the business to identify where performance can be improved, build robust bottom-up business cases, challenge assumptions, support implementation and ensure that agreed benefits are delivered into the P&L. The postholder will combine strong commercial and financial thinking with a practical understanding of operational delivery and change.

Key Responsibilities

Business Performance & P&L Improvement

  • Working closely with the Finance team, identify, quantify and prioritise opportunities to improve revenue, margin, productivity and cost-to-serve across the business.

  • Translate operational and commercial levers into clear financial impact, supported by robust assumptions, baselines and benefit tracking.
  • Maintain a prioritised pipeline of performance opportunities and ensure agreed initiatives progress from identification through implementation to realised P&L benefit.
  • Work with Finance to validate benefits, challenge accounting and performance assumptions where appropriate, and ensure improvements are visible in monthly reporting and reforecasting.
  • Support month-end performance review by explaining operational drivers behind financial variances and identifying corrective action.

Operations & Transformation

  • Develop and improve workforce planning, productivity and capacity models so that resources are aligned to service demand.
  • Support the redesign of operating models, working patterns and delivery processes to improve efficiency, resilience and service performance.
  • Build bottom-up operational models linking demand, capacity, productivity, workforce and cost.
  • Work with operational leaders to identify root causes of underperformance and convert analysis into practical, sustainable improvements.
  • Support transformation programmes by defining benefits, tracking delivery and ensuring operational changes translate into financial outcomes.

Finance Partnership

  • Partner closely with Finance on budgeting, reforecasting and performance analysis, providing operational insight and bottom-up challenge.
  • Analyse cost bases, revenue drivers, contribution and margin to identify opportunities for optimisation.
  • Develop business cases and scenario models that enable faster, evidence-based investment and performance decisions.
  • Provide constructive challenge to assumptions and ensure performance discussions focus on underlying drivers rather than headline variances alone.

Commercial & Proposition

  • Work with Commercial colleagues to optimise pricing structures, commercial models and contract economics.
  • Support proposition development by ensuring new services and commitments are operationally deliverable, scalable and financially attractive.
  • Bring robust cost-to-serve, capacity, margin and delivery modelling into bids, renewals and commercial negotiations.
  • Help demonstrate bid-winning innovation by translating operational improvements and new delivery models into compelling commercial propositions.

Performance Management & Execution

  • Establish a consistent performance-management cadence across agreed priority areas, linking operational activity to commercial and financial outcomes.
  • Create clear measures, ownership and benefit tracking for improvement initiatives and escalate where delivery is off track.
  • Provide concise, decision-focused insight to the Executive Team on performance, opportunities, risks and actions.
  • Build trusted relationships across Operations, Finance, Commercial and wider functional teams, acting as an integrator rather than duplicating functional ownership.

This job description is not exhaustive and serves only to highlight the main requirements of the post holder. The line manager may stipulate other reasonable requirements. The job description will be reviewed regularly and may be subject to change.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Significant experience in a business performance, commercial/operational finance, transformation, strategy or equivalent cross-functional role.
  • Strong financial and commercial acumen, with the ability to understand a P&L and translate operational drivers into financial outcomes.
  • Demonstrable experience identifying and delivering measurable cost, productivity, revenue or margin improvement.
  • Strong analytical and modelling capability, including advanced Excel skills and confidence working with complex operational and financial datasets.
  • Experience building bottom-up business cases, scenario models and performance plans.
  • Ability to move from analysis to implementation, working with operational and functional leaders to make change happen.
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills, including confidence constructively challenging senior leaders.
  • Commercial judgement and the ability to balance financial optimisation with service quality, customer commitments and operational feasibility.
  • Clear, concise communication skills with the ability to turn complex information into decision-focused recommendations.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in a private equity-backed, high-growth or transformation-led organisation.
  • Experience in healthcare, diagnostics, laboratory services, fulfilment, regulated services or another operationally complex environment.
  • Previous experience partnering across Operations, Finance and Commercial teams rather than operating within a single functional silo.
  • Experience of pricing, contract profitability, bids, propositions or cost-to-serve modelling.
  • Experience leading or supporting workforce productivity, capacity planning or operating model redesign.
  • Experience using business intelligence tools and developing management information or performance dashboards.
