Head of Engineering Head of Engineering Location: Remote (LATAM and US candidates considered) Engagement: Contract Time Zone: US business hours coverage About the Role We are a venture backed, early stage technology company building a modern platform used by a large, growing customer base. We're looking for an experienced technical leader to partner directly with our CEO and take ownership of engineering across our core product: a NestJS backend, a Next.js web application, and a React Native mobile app, all in a single monorepo. This is not a pure individual contributor role. You will spend your early weeks embedded closely with leadership, building context on the current systems, the roadmap, and where execution has been falling short of the product vision, before stepping fully into architectural and technical decision making authority. Expect the mandate to expand quickly once you've built trust. This is a hands on seat: you will write code, review code, and also decide what gets built and how. What Success Looks Like You build a real, trusted, working relationship with a non technical CEO who needs a partner he can rely on for straight answers, not just delivery. You bring structure to project tracking and delivery discipline without needing to be told to do it. You catch the moment a build is drifting from product intent and raise it immediately, rather than after the fact. Within a defined period, you are the person making architecture, tooling, and technical hiring calls for the company. Responsibilities Partner directly with the CEO and product leadership to translate roadmap and vision into technical execution, and proactively flag when implementation and product intent are diverging. Own project and delivery hygiene from day one: real use of existing tools, clear timelines, visible status, no surprises. Lead architecture, development, and deployment across the monorepo (NestJS backend, Next.js/App Router web, React Native/Expo mobile). Manage CI/CD (GitHub Actions) and deployment to AWS (ECR, ECS Fargate, Secrets Manager). Own the stability, security, and performance of critical business integrations, including payment processing, spreadsheet, and document platform APIs. As trust and context build, take on architectural authority, technical hiring input, and mentorship of the existing engineering team. Identify technical risk and organizational bottlenecks across the stack and act on them independently. Requirements 8+ years in software development, with meaningful time operating at a staff, principal, or technical leadership level, ideally including some experience as a CTO, VP of Engineering, or technical co founder at an early stage company. Fluent, confident, professional English communication. You will be the primary technical voice a non technical CEO relies on, so clarity and directness matter as much as technical depth. Demonstrated judgment and composure operating in ambiguous, high trust organizational moments. Deep hands on expertise in Node.js/TypeScript, NestJS, and MongoDB/Mongoose. Strong modern frontend background: React and Next.js (App Router). Mobile development experience with Expo/React Native. Working knowledge of AWS (ECR, ECS Fargate, Secrets Manager), Docker, and GitHub Actions. A track record of taking real ownership of technical roadmaps rather than just executing tickets. Nice to Have Prior experience stepping into a CTO or technical leadership transition at a company. Experience integrating payment platforms such as Stripe, including Connect and PaymentIntents. Familiarity with message queues (BullMQ) and caching technologies (Upstash Redis). Startup experience at a similar stage: early, fast moving, still defining its own technical org. Monorepo tooling experience (pnpm, ESLint, lefthook). Exposure to AI agent integration concepts.
