About the role
We're looking for a Head of Legal to join us at Confused.com, based in our Cardiff office. Reporting into our Group Head of Legal, you’ll provide legal leadership across the business, working with key stakeholders and leading our legal team. You'll give proactive, commercially minded advice, and you'll set the standards and processes that reinforce a culture of integrity, quality and ethical behaviour. We move quickly, challenge the way things have been done in the past and set the highest expectations, so in this role you'll have a real commercial and strategic impact on how we deliver our goals.
What you'll be doing
- Strategic Legal Advice: Advising stakeholders of varying disciplines and seniority, including senior leadership, on legal, strategic and risk issues, and making sure our exposure when contracting with third parties is appropriately balanced.
- Commercial Contracts: Leading negotiations on complex commercial contracts, including supplier, partner, software and data licensing agreements and general terms and conditions.
- Data Protection and Compliance: Working closely with the Group DPO to advise business teams on data protection and e-privacy compliance, and supporting the IT and marketing teams with their contractual needs.
- Leading the Confused Legal Team: Leading, mentoring and developing the legal team, with an emphasis on training and development, while managing our panel of external advisers.
- Risk, Disputes and Crisis Management: Acting as the key contact for crisis management (including litigation and brand protection), and guiding the business through contract disputes and minor litigation.
- Corporate and Governance: Carrying out company secretarial duties for Confused.com, supporting the Board and senior finance leadership.
- Regulatory Responsibility: This is a Certified role under the FCA’s Senior Managers and Certification Regime (SM&CR). You will lead the legal advice and oversight that keeps Confused.com compliant as an FCA-authorised firm.
- External stakeholder management: management of external legal advisors for specialist areas of law.
- AI and process transformation: leading and contributing to team initiatives to adopt AI and other legal technologies to transform legal processes.
- Standards and Knowledge: maintaining up-to-date precedent documents, keeping the business informed of relevant laws and policies, and delivering legal training to managers and teams.
What we're looking for
Essentials:
- Qualified Solicitor: Qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales (or another common law jurisdiction) with a current practising certificate and an extensive legal track record that includes relevant in-house experience.
- Commercial Expertise: Proven experience drafting, negotiating and concluding complex commercial transactions
- Data Protection Knowledge: Strong expertise in data protection and e-privacy law
- Leadership and Influence: Experience advising and influencing senior stakeholders on complex matters involving multiple parties.
Desirable:
- Experience of using AI tooling within legal processes
- A practical understanding of intellectual property and competition law issues
- Experience of the insurance sector or other regulated sector
