Who We Are:
At Northland, we’re enablers of change, united by our journey to transform the energy sector into the foundation for a sustainable future.
Since our inception, we’ve been early movers in the energy industry, adopting new initiatives that pave the way for communities across the globe and helping forge their path towards a carbon-neutral landscape.
We’re a different kind of independent power producer. As developers, owners and operators who are at the forefront of the energy transition, we’re uniquely positioned to leave a lasting impact in the regions where we operate. We’ve expanded our business across Canada, the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia to become a global leader, all by bringing together industry experts to find solutions with an entrepreneurial mindset.
While our work powers communities across the globe, Northland is powered by our people.
What You’ll Do:The Head of Market Intelligence & Analytics is accountable for building and leading Northland’s enterprise market intelligence and analytics capabilities. The role establishes independent, decision-ready views of wholesale power and related commodity markets, translates those views into consistent commercial assumptions, and ensures those insights are applied across strategy, development, M&A, financing, market operations, asset management and portfolio optimization.
Establish scalable in-house forecasting and modelling capabilities, guide market analysts and technical resources, and determine where external specialists remain appropriate. The successful candidate combines deep electricity-market judgment, strong quantitative fluency, practical model-development oversight and the ability to communicate complex market dynamics to executive and investment audiences.
Build a global centre of expertise that protects, optimizes and sustainably grows the commercial value of Northland’s contracted and merchant portfolio, while underpinning new development opportunities with rigorous market intelligence, forward curves, fundamental analysis, scenario modelling and asset-level commercial insight. The initial priority is to establish repeatable capabilities for core markets and then scale them across Northland’s broader international portfolio.
The role is required to work in the Toronto office 4 days per week with one flexible day to work from home.
Key Responsibilities:
Market Intelligence
- Working with the Director of Regulatory & Market Affairs, lead the development of Northland’s wholesale market strategy across relevant jurisdictions, identifying long-term trends, structural opportunities, downside risks and implications for capital allocation.
- Develop and maintain internal views on supply and demand evolution, market design, natural gas, carbon, capacity, ancillary services, environmental attributes and other material value drivers.
- Create a consistent market-outlook and assumption-setting process for use across business cases, investment decisions, budgets, forecasts and commercial strategies.
- Working with the Director of Regulatory & Market Affairs, translate market, policy and regulatory developments into alerts and actionable recommendations for internal stakeholders.
Forecasting, Modelling and Analytics
- Own the roadmap and delivery of internal forward curves (short and long term), market-level fundamental models and supporting analytical tools, beginning with priority markets and scaling as business needs and capability mature.
- Set modelling architecture, scenarios, input assumptions and quality standards; provide sufficient technical depth to review, challenge and guide Python-based and commercial-platform model development.
- Develop scenario and sensitivity analysis covering load growth, generation additions and retirements, fuel and carbon prices, weather, transmission build-out, policy, technology costs, capture rates and operating constraints.
- Build dashboards and repeatable reporting that make market views, assumptions, risks and forecast changes transparent and accessible to decision-makers.
Asset, Portfolio and Transaction Decision Support
- Lead market analysis supporting development, acquisitions, divestitures, financing, budgeting and optimization of operating assets, including merchant revenue forecasts and high-level asset valuations.
- Provide dispatch, capture-price, congestion, basis, curtailment, ancillary-service and other commercial analyses appropriate to each market, technology and contract structure.
- Support hedging decisions, PPA and offtake strategy, competitive bid and RFP analysis, route-to-market decisions, commercial operating strategies and portfolio risk discussions.
- Partner with Finance and transaction teams on lender, sale and investment processes, using independent third-party forecasts where external validation is required while maintaining a clear Northland view.
Capability, Data and Model Governance
- Establish a practical build-versus-buy strategy for data, tools, modelling platforms and external advisory support, with clear accountabilities, budgets and service standards.
- Implement model governance covering documentation, version control, assumption ownership, change management, validation, back-testing [CS3.1]and independent challenge proportionate to the decision being supported.
- Define data requirements and partner with Technical Performance Management, Data, Digital and IT teams to develop reliable and scalable market-data infrastructure.
- Manage relationships with market-data providers, modelling vendors and consultants; reduce avoidable external dependence while retaining specialist support where it adds value or is required by third parties.
Leadership and Stakeholder Partnerships
- Build, lead and develop a high-performing market intelligence and analytics team, setting priorities and balancing recurring market coverage with transaction and asset-specific demands.
- Act as a senior thought partner to Development, Regulatory & Market Affairs, Government Affairs, Asset Management, Risk, Finance and executive leadership.
- Present complex market conclusions, model limitations and key uncertainties in a clear, decision-oriented manner for investment committees, senior leaders and boards.
Who You Are:
- A strategic market leader: You possess deep expertise in wholesale power and commodity markets and can translate market trends, risks and opportunities into commercial strategy, investment decisions and portfolio outcomes.
- An analytical and technically credible expert: You combine strong quantitative capabilities with hands-on experience in market modelling, forecasting and data analytics, bringing the ability to challenge assumptions, interrogate models and drive rigorous decision-making.
- A builder of capabilities: You thrive in creating and scaling new functions, frameworks and governance models, balancing internal capability development with the strategic use of external tools, data and advisory support.
- A trusted advisor and communicator: You can distill complex market dynamics, forecasts and uncertainties into clear, actionable insights that influence executives, investment committees and boards.
- A collaborative and inspiring leader: You build high-performing teams, foster technical excellence and partner effectively across functions, geographies and stakeholder groups to deliver business value.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in economics, engineering, mathematics, statistics, finance, computer science or a related discipline; a relevant master’s degree or MBA is an asset.
- 10 or more years of progressive experience in wholesale power markets, energy-market analytics, fundamental forecasting, commercial strategy or a closely related field, including leadership of people or major analytical programs.
- Demonstrated experience developing or directing power-market forecasts, fundamental models, dispatch and revenue analysis, scenario frameworks and asset-valuation inputs.
- Deep understanding of electricity-market design and commercial drivers; experience across more than one ISO/RTO or international market is strongly preferred.
- Experience across a diverse technology portfolio, such as wind, solar, storage and gas-fired generation, and with contracted and merchant revenue structures.
- Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders, manage external advisors and convert complex analytical work into clear commercial decisions.
