Health & Safety Manager

VSL is an international construction company specialising in technical solutions for complex construction and civil engineering projects and is part of the Bouygues Construction Group. With around 4'000 employees across 25 locations worldwide, VSL specialises in:

• Structural systems and technologies (post-tensioning)
• Building and civil engineering (bridges, infrastructure and tunnels)

• Maintenance, repair and strengthening of structures

In Switzerland, VSL operates its own production facility in Subingen. The team manufactures and manages technical construction components for national and international projects.

Your Role & Main Responsibilities

• H&S Policies and Standards: You review the existing VSL Health & Safety policies and ensure their effective integration and consistent implementation across the business.
• Leadership & H&S Culture: You work closely with the Leadership Team and actively contribute to developing and strengthening a strong and sustainable Health & Safety culture across the business.
• Safety Inspections: You conduct regular inspections on construction sites and at our production facility, identify potential risks and initiate appropriate corrective measures.
• Risk Management: You develop safe systems of work and provide practical advice to project teams on assessing and mitigating risks as well as implementing H&S best practices.
• H&S Advice: You act as a key point of contact for all Health & Safety matters and support managers and project teams in implementing appropriate measures.
• SUVA and VSL Standards: You ensure compliance with applicable legal requirements as well as the Health & Safety standards and procedures of SUVA and the VSL Group.
• ISO 45001: You ensure that the Health & Safety management approach is aligned with ISO 45001 requirements and support the continuous development and improvement of the relevant processes.
• Health & Safety Management System: You support the preparation, updating and implementation of the Health & Safety Management System and relevant project plans.
• H&S Investigations: Where required, you lead investigations into Health & Safety incidents, conduct root cause analyses and ensure that appropriate corrective and preventive actions are defined and implemented.
• External Stakeholders: You represent Health & Safety matters in interactions with key external stakeholders, including clients, government authorities and other relevant organisations.
• Training: You train and raise awareness among employees and managers regarding safe working practices, safety standards and the correct use of safety equipment.
• Reporting & Analysis: You analyse relevant H&S metrics and data and prepare monthly reports for the Leadership Team. You identify trends and, where necessary, recommend and initiate appropriate improvement measures.

Your Profile

Education & Experience:

• You have at least 10 years of professional experience in the construction industry in a responsible Health & Safety leadership role.
• You hold a recognised qualification in Occupational Health & Safety. Recognition as an Occupational Health & Safety Specialist (ASGS) in Switzerland is an advantage.
• Other relevant qualifications may also be considered, provided you can demonstrate the necessary professional competence to work in Health & Safety in Switzerland and the EU.
• You have solid experience in risk management, developing safe systems of work and conducting investigations into Health & Safety incidents.
• Knowledge of ISO 45001 and experience with relevant management systems are required.
• You are comfortable working independently, setting priorities and planning and implementing the necessary measures autonomously.
• You have strong Microsoft Office 365 skills.

Languages:

• You are a native German or French speaker and have a good command of English.
• Knowledge of the other national language is an advantage.

Personality:

• You communicate confidently and effectively with employees, project teams, senior management and external stakeholders.
• You have strong leadership skills and the ability to engage and influence others on Health & Safety matters.
• You work independently, take a practical and solution-oriented approach and remain effective in challenging situations.
• You are flexible, self-motivated and willing to take responsibility and actively drive improvements.
